This place make big impact on religious believers
I know the story of the apparition of Our Lady to 3 children since my childhood as I was brought up as Catholic. So visiting this place was like a great gift to me. It was built to impress, that's for sure. It's massive building at the end of more than huge square. You need to manage several stairs which was a bit challenge for me having problem with knees. In the middle is open and covered altar which is used , I think, during religious holidays and special occasions. I don't know what I expected to be inside but the space is not highly decorated, I would say it's very moderate to simple as it's about the faith. When we were there half of the benches were fenced due to cleaning/vacuuming the walls. Most visitors were congregated around the chapel with the tombs of Jacinta and Francisco. The view from the entry platform on the square is amazing, I could imagine how it can be full of people. It definitely made spiritual impact on me.

    Such Emotions Seen
I can understand the religious importance of this location to many of the Catholic faith. You can see walking pilgrimages on most roads as you enter the area. I saw believers with genuine tears running down their faces as they enter the plaza in front of the Basilica and as they stood in front of the Chapel of the Apparitions which marks the exact location where the three shepherd children reported having received the visits of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1917. There are many 'souvenir' shops and cafes for relevant remembrances of the visit.

Magnificient and awe inspiring looking church
This grand and majestic basilica is befitting to the significance of the holy site. The church itself is at the center of a semicircular arc extending out on both sides embracing Monumento Ao Sagrado Coração de Jesus in the center of the esplanade. Inside, the church is very nice too, especially the altar, but more austere in comparison.

One of the holiest sites in Christendom.
This is a difficult review. Fatima is one of the 2 most religious sites, Lourdes is the other, in the Christion religion. According to the belief, the Virgin Mary appeared to 3 children three young Portuguese shepherds, Lúcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, by a Marian apparition, starting on 13 May 1917. The three children claimed to have been visited by the Virgin Mary six times between May and October 1917. The apparition is now popularly known as Our Lady of Fátima. The site has now been 'upgraded' enormously and actually has to be seen. It is exceptionally difficult to describe the enormity of the site. It has to be seen to be appreciated..

    Worth visiting
Our first visit to Fátima since 1979. The sanctuary was very pretty. The plaza outside of it is huge; on the scale of Saint Peter’s square at the Vatican. It takes more time to walk from the car park to the sanctuary than it takes to visit it.

    Beautiful and spiritual
We took a bus from Fatima , and realize the town has a higher altitude and was colder than Lisbon. Churches and chapels ultra modern and lacking usual ornate alters us older Catholics accustomed to. Attended outdoor mass that was beautiful. Large beautiful monuments and gardens. Little village has nice traditional restaurants and stores. I would have enjoyed more time exploring.

Significant Catholic Pilgrimage Site, A Moving Experience
One of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, the Sanctuary of Fatima is located where three shepherd children saw visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1917. The Miracle of the Sun occurred here on 13 October 1917. It was an astounding event witnessed by tens of thousands where the sun whirled and appeared to crash to earth, immediately drying all who had been soaked by rains. The event is considered a supernatural event by the Church. The message of Fatima to the children was that of repentance by man. All three of the children (two of whom were beatified as saints) are buried in the basilica at Fatima. You can feel the spiritual atmosphere here for sure. Enter the basilica by the front stairs or via slight inclining ramps on the sides. The basilica is tranquil and well-designed for an early 20th century church. Fatima can be reached via day tours from Lisbon.

I was dragged along to Fatima given my distaste for the Catholic church. However, despite my views I was impressed. These guys are good at marketing and spending their believers money.
The new church is an enormous concrete blockhouse from the outside [i didnt go in] and the square in frontof it is an enormous, impressive area.
An abstract Christ on the Cross in front of the new church is very powerful.
There is a long 'path' for supplicants to proceed on their knees to the old church - kneepads provided.
