Santa Cruz Monastery in Coimbra is a landmark in the history of one of Portugal, one of the oldest countries in Europe. Its visit will transport you through 900 years of history, from the foundation of Portugal until modern times. Impressive architecture marks the place where King D. Afonso Henriques, founder of the kingdom of Portugal in the XI century,... More

The history of the place alone is worth the visit! From an architectural point of view this is a fabulous place to visit and you should take your time to carefully look at all the details of the church/monastery. I totally recommend a visit here!

This lovely church has a big piece of history of Portugal beneath with a few king tombs inside and a great and well maintain architecture. The building its extremely old but very well maintain so try to take your time around to enjoy as much as you can. Its free so you dont have excuses.

We have seen many churches in Lisbon, Porto and Granada the past two weeks and this one pales by comparison. It is still a good sample of the churches from that time but only if you haven't visited a bunch of other ones.

This is a very old very beautiful building.mit appears to be a church within a church. A must see if you go to Coimbra. Lots to see in the shopping and foo district. You will be overcome by the special pieces of tile art on the walls. A musty see.

THis church has two very beautiful sculpted tombs of the first two kings of Portugal. Well worth visiting this church. It is free to visit this site and walk all the way into the back by the alter to see the tombs.

There is nothing wrong, but in the peninsula of Iberia or country of Portugal, there is so much history and so much to see that I am not sure that this sight would make the list.

In this church you can find two remarkable sculpted tombs, of the two first Portuguese kings, with statues by Chanterene, one of the finest renaissance sculptors working in Portugal. The pulpit is also his work. There is also a very nice gothic cloister and a few ornate rooms, with lovely decorative tiles.

The first two kings of Portugal, King Afonso Henriques and of his successor, King Sancho I, are buried in the church and that in itself makes it worth a visit. The architecture is interesting and I highly recommend that you do some reading about the history of the Church before you visit. Next to the church and once part of... More

must see if visiting coimbra, beautiful church, Afonso Henriques' tomb by the altarpiece. Surprisingly, in spite of its historical significance it misses repair works
