A Moorish stone gateway, the Arco, leads up into the Almedina from the town, but we started at the top, after visiting the university. You make your way slowly down and get lost in a maze of narrow steep lanes. At the town end there...More

we went on a Sunday when the town was sleepy and quiet. Not too many shops were opened and definitely no Fado signing on the street

This arch is your entry to a brief but steep climb nicknamed the "back breaker" that leads you to the Velha Se (Old Cathedral) and the National Museum and ultimately the University.

No matter the time or day you can come see this fabulous archway in the middle of Coimbra, Portugal. I came early on a Sunday morning and Fado was playing. It's a great part of this city's architectural history. There is a museum attached and...More

It´s a place to pass through. Nothing special but history. You can find some good places to eat and some shops on the street.

Do not expect to be awestruck as it is after all just an archway. However it is quite interesting to visit and imagine the old city wall that once surrounded Coimbra. It is the gateway to the winding cobbled streets which lead up to the...More

We twice tried to find this museum before we were successful. It is tucked away just uphill (and up a staircase too) in the small square above the second gate. The museum is full of great information about Coimbra's castle and gates, and this info...More

It is hard to find free parking sites close to Coimbra's city centre. However the parking prices are acceptable and to park near Ponte de Santa Clara seems to be the best solution to visit Coimbra's centre.
