We didn’t expect much but the interactive display and physical model are excellent, offering a comprehensive overview of the history of Coimbra. Excellent views too from the top floor. Don’t let the low price fool you!

The Almedina Arch, in Coimbra with its Almadina Tower, forms the only surviving medieval gate, conquered by the Arabs in the 11th century still standing. The word Almedina is derived from the Arabic word for town.

Porta and Torre de Almedina is the main access to the historic city of Coimbra. The tower, one of the most imposing of the walls, ensured the defense of this narrow access. This gate is sometimes confused with the Porta da Barbacã, which is instead part of a second wall built to improve the defendability of the city.

This was at the end of our walk. Wonderful to walk under, take pictures pretend you were around 1000 years ago.

Torre de Almedina is the only left town gate out of three from the medieval era.
You're sure to pass it when going to/from the University square. It's an arched gate set between houses on an extremely steep street - just a pass by attraction.

At this arch and tower you will enter the old town and be in the most charming area of Coimbra where you will find cafes perched on steep steps, a Fado parlor, and the old cathedral. Must see.

Just in the center of the city and near the cathedral. Even when it is a little small, take a look because is very well kept.

Arco de Almedina is the only surviving gate of the three that led to the citadel, rebuilt in the XI century by the famous Arab commander Al-Mansur. The tower was first used as a Town Hall, then the Town Hall moved to the monastery of Santa Cruz and the municipal archive was here. Rue de Kebra Costas, which leads through the arch to the old cathedral in translation means unbearable street. It was really not easy to pull the goods from the Marketplace up the hill over the slick, polished cobblestones.

The arch marks the entrance to the old town and is a remnant of the old walls. There's a steep slope up to it and an even steeper slope beyond it leading ever upwards. The stone road is very slippery when wet so wear shoes or sandals with a good grip. We were in Coimbra in the cool of February; I would imagine walking up here in the summer heat would be truly exhausting. The tower by the arch has a small museum.

Nice gateway that separates the different levels of the town. It is in fact amazing how this city is layered.
