While at the University I realized we were by the aqueduct so we walked by to glance at it. Dating from 1570 it is impressive, but not as impressive as the Roman aqueduct in Segovia, Spain. It’s a short stop to take a few photos, then move in.

If you are in the centre of Coimbra it is hard to miss this impressive aqueduct which runs for over a kilometre. However, there is a misconception supported by a number of reviews that it is Roman. In fact it was built during the reign of D. Sebastio, hence the name, and designed by his architect Filipe Terzi during the period from 1570 onwards. Whilst it was built on the site of the old Roman aqueduct, it is not of that period. Nevertheless it is well worth checking out.

The aqueduct looms over the street very close to our hotel, and was beautifully lit at night. A fascinating glimpse of the past.

This stone built aqueduct was built between 1568 and 1570 on the site of what was a Roman aqueduct and what visitors see is known as Acos do Jardim (Garden Arches).
It consists of 20 arches in total and is so named as it ends at the Jardim Botânico (Botanical garden).
In front of the aqueduct is a cobbled roundabout with a statue of Pope Paul II to commemorate his visit to the city in 1982.

Nice they're still here after all this time but after Segovia in Spain they're a but underwhelming. But at least they are still there and haven't been smashed down

A really interesting aqueduct with virtually no signage or explanation. It is just there at the fringes of (a much underrated) botanical garde3n run by the University. It merits better treatment than that.

Our buses parked near this aqueduct when we visited the university. This game me an opportunity for photos of this well-preserved historical treasure.

You will find this old and picturesque aqueduct at the Pope's traffic circle and near the Botanical Gardens. It is a bit shocking at first because it is so high. Leads to the elevated city at the University.

My wife and I just happened upon the Aqueduct while walking to the University through the Botanical Gardens. The Aqueduct is in very good condition and worthy of a photo opportunity!

The area in general is really nice with a lot of gardens and the university really close. The aqueduct is really long and well preserved.
