    Best boat trip ever
Explore the lagoon of Aveiro. We took a two hour boat trip with Gustavo tel 351 932 806 522 seeing flamingo, osprey, heron, passing mussel fishermen, an old cod fish sailing ship, the port of Aveiro, the salt marinas, traditional fishinermen's houses and more. All explained in clear English by our well informed skipper who has a real passion for the area. It was the best boat tour we've ever taken anywhere in the world. A personal experience for the two of us. Only 25 Euros per person. Excellent value. The boat leaves from the end of the canal system close to the loch gate to the lagoon.

    Peaceful stroll
This was a nice, peaceful walk. I wouldn’t say it’s a “must see” but if you’re in the area, check it out. We walked around at a casual pace for about an hour. There was a Christmas market set up along the way, so that was a nice diversion.

    The "Venice of Portugal" Indeed
We were only here for a couple of hours but found Aveiro to be a gorgeous place. The title, "The Venice of Portugal", is so appropriate. The walk along the waterway is beautiful. There are numerous opportunities for a water cruise. We found the area to have many great shops and restaurants. If you come here, try and spend at least half a day so you can truly soak up all the Aveiro has to offer.

This is a lovely walk, lots of interesting things to see, and you can take a trip down the canals, with many boats available.

The Ria de Aveira runs right thru the middle of Aviera. There are several interesting bridges on the river.

We really enjoyed the canal cruise in a Traditional Moliceiro Boat. Each boat has a naught painting on it's bow .

The cruise lasts about 1 hour going from the end of the river to almost the Atlantic Ocean. There is a narrative tape in several languages explaining the sites and history.

A nice little old town very busy with tourists due to this canal but to call it Venice because of that is a bit far fetched its nice with attractive boats taking tourists for a ride

Aveiro is a cute and charming town and that's it. It's enough to spend 3-4 hours here, half day max, ride the gondola if you like, walk the historic center,... .
It has its canals and colorful gondolas, which are nice in design.
By no means it's the Venice of Portugal - canals are much wider, architecture incomparable, gondolas motor powered,...etc.
I really hate that tourism platitude Venice of east, of north, Little Venice,....etc for every city that has canals or lies on water.

We enjoyed the boat trip even though some family members said it was cringe but if you are in Aveiro, what else are you going to do? It is a must. It lasts around 45 minutes and you get to hear some interesting information about the city so why not. We paid 13 euro per person.

When I went for the free breakfast at Hotel das Salinas in Aveiro, I noticed a "Rube Goldberg" orange juicer. Shaped like a Ferris wheel, whole oranges were fed from a hopper into a circular wheel with holding spots. I've never seen such a machine.
In front of the hotel is the canal with several vendors offering short cruises. We hired one at 10E pp (senior's price) with operators Antonio and buxom Febriana. Ours was the first outing of the day.
They tried their best to make the 30 min cruise interesting, but this attraction is nowhere close to the Venice experience. They encouraged us to tip. We did especially for the enthusiastic commentary.

Aveiro is the Venice of Portugal. It is situated close enough to Porto that you could easily stay near here for visits to Porto which is more crowded. Aveiro is charming, even magical at night with the lights reflecting off the canals. Colourful boats and plenty of restaurants. We went with family, including pre-teens. Everyone was interested.
