About
Angra has had three city halls. The first city hall had a small square in front. Later, the trade from India and the importance of the city led to the construction of a larger square and a new building with lateral staircases, a portico with columns, and a bell tower. The existing city hall was built in the nineteenth century and was inspired by the Oporto's old City Hall. It has one of the largest and grandiose great halls in the country.

We stayed at the hotel next to the town hall and decided to pay a visit on our last day there. It was a lovely historic building and the interior decoration made it look like a mini traditional palace. Free to visit.

Interesting Historic Building Free To Enter And walk around, we went upstairs to the two large rooms, very nice to see the architecture and paintings, you will spend around 10 to 15 minutes visiting the interior.

The town hall visit is free but only takes about ten minutes to see. The second floor has two council rooms which are lavishly decorated. Interesting that there was a small polar bear sculpture in the display case given to Angra from Winnipeg.

They have had 3 Town Halls and the current building was built in the 19th century. It is surrounded by decorative cobblestone paths and roads. We sat in the Central Square which is right outside the Town Hall and watched the locals preparing for a Festival in Central Square

Easy enough to step in for a look around while you are downtown. I think it's basically open during the work week, and you just step inside and ask the receptionist if you can look around, and she waves you in. We went upstairs and saw some impressive and European-looking rooms where presumably they hold city council meetings and court. If there was an English explanation posted for any of this, I did not see it.

After a good lunch we were ready for some more adventure & the Town Hall was right in front. The drizzle started so we headed in to explore. What a treat! The beautiful rooms upstairs are like candy for the eyes.

Well worth a short visit as it is free and open. An impressive building inside and out, with a lot of history and some fascinating artefacts. A local guide is helpful to tell the stories ans there are no information boards, etc.

The City Center of Angra do Heroismo overlooking the main square. We didn't enter the building but it seems you can do that.

We were pleasantly surprised that we could just roam around with no escorts to check out this place. It was unexpectedly interesting, although it would have been more so if we had some more context about what we were looking at.
