Reading the reviews, we were expecting sharp climbing and heavy trekking.
I carried a 5 month old baby in a strap on baby carrier and my boyfriend helped our 6yo along muddy paths.
The track is gorgeous, doable, though tricky at times.
It was one of our best afternoons on the island.

Amazing! Not an easy one but one of the best. You feel like in in rain forest. Ful of mud that give to it the right vibe. We did it in 2.5 hours.

It says 5 km but seems much more, beginning and end easy walk but the middle…. You are travelling through lava fuels, some parts of trail have lots of climbing over sharp boulders in fairly narrow areas. Also at times you are as if in a rain forest.

I hiked this trail when I first visited Terceira (when I was only 6 years old) and back then it was my favourite, so I wanted to hike it again when visiting the island again. It was super muddy and wet because it rained the days before (and a bit during the hike), but it was still super worth it. I recommend using mountain boots if possible, or at least trainers, as it's not the easiest hike in terms of terrain. Try not to miss it if you like hiking!

The hike starts rather easy and guides you through a forest, a little lake, volcanic rocks and another forest to finish the walk. You end up in the asphalt road again and you walk about 10-15 minutes to get back to the starting point.
You need good boots and get ready that there's plenty of mud and slippery stones if you visit the forest after a rainy day. Don't start the hike if it's raining.
The middle bit of the walk can be challenging if you have knee problems. Bring a walking stick to save your knees.
There are beautiful colours of nature on the go.
I highly recommend the hike.

I did this trail because a friendly couple who had already been on Terceira island referred to me as a beautiful place where it was really worth visiting.
And they were right, spectacular trail to do, I thought it was easier to do but it was really worth it!
I advise anyone who visiting Terceira island like me, please go on this magnificent trail with beautiful nature landscapes!
Thank you grace and it's husband.

Was reading another review of this made in January 2020 that says you have to be as fit as a mountain goat. Not sure of that was meant as a joke, but this was a relatively easy hike/trek. The official trail notice describes it as difficult. I'd rate it as easy to moderate and took me around 1hr 10 min - I was moving fast. It's suggested that it takes 2.5 hrs - if you're moving very very slowly. It's is just under 4.5 km, not 8km as previous reviewer claims.
Goodness knows what hike the previous reviewer had actually done. One of the nicest I've done on the Azores. Lakes, lava tubes, lots of volcanic geological features, magical woodlands, avenues of Japanese cedars.
A few obstacles requiring some clambering and a bit of climbing over jagged sharp volcanic rocks.
Sticks not necessary and neither are boots really, but very boggy in some places.
Highly recommended.

If you are not in good to excellent condition stay away. They say this route is 4.9km - bologna. I have run my entire life and I know distances very well. This hike is at least 8km. Having said that, if you like a challenge like I do, you’ll have wonderful experience. Do not think you’ll complete this is an hour as it will take, at the minimum, 2 and possibly 3. Be on the lookout for red/yellow markers that indicate the correct route. This are not always easy to spot. Be prepared to climb boulders, trek through mud and possibly twist ankles. Again, not for the faint of heart. Recommendation - for trekkers only.

If you know Lord of the Rings, then you may well like this trail. we went off-season and had it COMPLETELY to ourselves. what a treat! volcanic in some segments, as well as marshy elsewhere, and often "elvin" or "entlike" with moss-and- lichen covered gnarled tress. also very interesting caverns and fumaroles are nearby, if you want to feel a bit 'dwarven.'

This trail is marked as the most difficult trail in Terceira, and not for nothing! Not only you will be climbing rocks when going up but also because get really muddy and wet - we literally has to jump each step you make! We went in december and may be the trail is dryer in summer, but still make sure to have good hiking books (as it gets muddy and slippery) and I'd recommend to leave extra shoes/socks/clothes change in the car in case your shoes get wet. This is not a trail for running shoes!!! And I don't recommend hiking pole as you need both hands to climb the rock steps!
But you will be awarded with the views once you get to the top :)
