We stumbled across this museum while walking around Ponta Delgado. I took as many photos of the old wooden chairs, stair railings, and arches as I did of the bird and animal exhibits. I would have enjoyed the video of the cloistered nuns more had there been an English translation available. This is a beautiful old building.

I stumbled across this museum. It was very inexpensive (2 euros) to get in and I ended up spending a couple of hours there. It was a Natural History Museum with lots of great exhibits combined with a church that has a very interesting history as a cloistered nunnery. Very much enjoyed!

There are three museums that operate together close by. By mistake, we entered the first museum, Nucleo de Santo Andre, a room of sculptures by an Azorean artist. The main museum, Nucleo de Santa Barbara/ Museo Carlos Machado, is located a block up, in the old convent, and turned out to be the best museum value of our Portugal trip.... More

I got the feeling that something's wrong with the museum! Although it has been renovated, the exhibition is somewhat confusing. It lacks many things, some of them fundamental. It lacks maps, information and a correct display of the pieces. Without maps you feel lost in this space and with no sense of which circuit you should take, and most of... More

This museum is newly opened. It combines a display of convent life with a naturalist display of birds and aquatic life. Certainly worth the €2 entry fee.

Discovered this museum by accident, but is well worth a visit - the paintings and sculptures are amazing.

Typical buildings in Ponta Delgada, with very limited exhibitions in both the museum and in the chapel.

The chapel itself is beautiful, but the museum holdings are slim. The largest exhibit is the sculptures of Ernesto Canto da Maya. But DO see the chapel at the Museum of Sacred Art nearby.

There are 2 sections to this museum: one in an old church, and the other a few blocks away. In the main museum you need to pay 2 EUR to enter, but the collection is pretty impressive. In the other museum it's free and there is a smaller collection of mainly modern art.

Currently free because all of the church and most of the gallery are off limits during renovation. However, it may still be worth a quick visit while walking by since they do let you peek your head into the doorway of the church. Watching how the workmen are on scaffolds, removing and protecting the stonework and artifacts is something you... More
