Nice short explanations about lava caves and how they emerged. Good guides, would be even possible to book longer trips but needs to be booked in advance.

We visited these caves as part of a one day Eco Tour that can be booked in advance. Our guide, Nina, drove us to a range of locations and explained the geological and volcanic history of a number of features in the central area of the island. The tour ended with a visit to the caves which were spectacular as... More

If you want to see a lava tube, very well preserved, with good lighting effects and geologic details you must visit this place. Very safe and well organized . Don't forget your camera...

You can do 2 tours. One short one for 5€ per person with talkative guide (he truly was awesome) or 3h tour based on appointment. The cave is different Visually mainly as it's created from volcano. Worth seeing it.

We were staying close to the water in Ponta Delgada and with a sudden free afternoon we decided to take the 20 minute walk to Gruta do Carvoa. When going to the Sao Miguel be flexible with your tours and activities. The weather sometimes has a different idea than what you have planned for your visit. When we got there... More

The longer tour of 2 hours must be previously booked and it is a little bit challenging. Along the 1 km path you have to crawl and pass by narrow spaces, therefore you must be ready for sweating ;). It is very interesting and you can see "bolas de lava", and other rock formations. The staff is very nice and... More

2 mile walk uphill from our hotel brought us to the caves based on a housing and industrial near the motorway. 45 minute tour was very informative, and well worth the 5 euro fee. Good changing facilities and toilets. Our son ( 7 months old) loved it. Bring a jumper - temperature is 12-15c underground - warm if you are... More

Very interesting to see how this cave was built. The staff explained everything. They did a great work also restructuring the cave. (the locales didn't realized what this was before and had another use for it... ask about it!!) They have also guided tours further in the cave. You have to book it, you need old clothes there for. They... More

This cave of volcanic origin of the Island of São Miguel is known geologically as "Complex Volcanic of the Peaks". It is located in the western part of the city of Ponta Delgada and forms the largest lava tunnel on the Island. After many years, it is currently being explored and it is possible to cover a stretch of about... More

I went to this attraction as part of a half-day trip with a tour operator. It wasn't worth the price I paid so I would suggest you get a cab from Ponta Delgado or drive yourself there. The video viewed before the cave walk was a bit outdated and not great, but they explained they are working on a replacement.... More
