    Beautiful lake
Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) is a volcano caldera. When the last eruption occurred in 1563, the inhabitants thought it was a fire lake, hence the name. The views from the crater rim of Lagoa do Fogo are magnificent. You can even see Ponta Delgada.

    Must visit!
An absolutely beautiful visit! The views are amazing. The hike was incredible and the trail around the lake is gorgeous. Heads up, during certain months if you’re driving a rental car, you need to park down the hill and board a bus (5€) to reach the viewpoint and start of the hiking trail.

Hiking tour of Lagoa do Fogo
I took a tour walking all the way to the top and then down to the lake. I was by myself so I went with a guide from Fun Activities Azores Adventures. I was very glad I did this because my guide Daniella was very informative about all the plants and things we saw. She was a great source of knowledge about the island in general and we had an amazing conversation the whole time. I don't really like tours but I thought that for a first time it was much more secure and interesting to do it this way.

We walked from Ribeira Grande to the Lagoa. There is a great viewing point at the top with a possibility to walk down to the waters edge. The path gets narrow so need to decide if you go on further.

Excellent views from the lookout points. Go on a sunny day. Best views in Azores!
For those with rental cars, see the pictures attached for information on the shuttle buses.

We only stopped and took in the lookout points, but what amazing views! There appeared to be some hiking trails, so I trust you can explore the area much more than we did. Well worth the drive up and stop!

Like everyone else here we waited in vain for the shuttle at caldeira velha and couldn’t find any information on what time it would arrive or its frequency. We gave up and came back the next day at sunrise. Can’t recommend this highly enough. We were able to drive all the way up to the viewpoint with only a few other people around, and did the walk along the shore. It was stunning. As of 9:35am when we finished our visit and drove away, there had yet to be sighting of this alleged shuttle.

Came here with rental car to realize you have to take a shuttle. No timings available, huge line ups and could be full of fog once you arrive.
Decided to leave this for next time, but from the photos the place looks magical.

The place is stunning. The shuttle bus is horrendous . From June 2023 the access is regulated by a shuttle bus. There is ONE shuttle bus running every 70+ minutes. It costs 5 euros per person. Calculate the time of arrival very well and beware it can only take a certain amount of people, so if you do not fight to death with your trip mates, you might miss one and end up wait another 70+ min. There is no way to know the timings, no way to know how long you will wait. No info and just one shuttle bus is very problematic (and it was mid September, imagine in August). The service is absolutely not up to the job.
There is an info office but the ladies have no idea when the bus would be coming, they just say a random number.
When the bus arrives it is completely packed with absolute no regard to safety of the passengers.
This is a ridiculous service.

This may be a worthwhile place to see. BUT if you have a rented car you must leave it in a parking lot and wait for a shuttle bus to take you up to the viewpoints of the lake. The shuttle only seems to go once an hour, so you may wait an hour for it, and another hour to get back. Presuming it is not full! And you have to pay for it. We waited for half an hour then gave up. Totally inadequate service.
