Great volcanic museum and park!

This volcano erupted in 1957-58, and in doing so both added 1Km to the west end of Faial, and led to the emigration of nearly 5,000 Azoreans to the USA. The Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre was constructed underground, in the volcanic debris, and then covered over, so as to leave the landscape in its post-volcanic natural state. There is a... Sixty Seven years ago this new land was born of a volcanic eruption just off the shores of Faial island. Kind of a must see attraction now. It is possible to hike the area too.

This part of Fail takes a while to reach from Horta along twisty roads. Once you arrive you will immediately be overwhelmed by the barren nature of the new land created in the past century. A true sense of how our planet has morphed over the millennia.

Being there feels like visiting another planet. A huge black piece of desert created on a place that used to be the ocean just 60 years ago. When I saw Capelinhos on a photo before coming to Faial I thought it was way smaller - and I mean it's huuuge... A truly stunning place. The museum was very interesting, too.... More

My wife and i visited the famous Capelinhos Volcano on Faial Island Portugal on a bus tour. The history of how over thousands of year the magma, which is the molten rock underground, would rise to the surface and flow as lava and ashes would fall all over the ground areas and finally flow out to the sea. Learning how... More

This is a must see if you are on Faial! The landscape is amazing and the museum is well worth it! We learned so much in the museum and at the end you get to climb the lighthouse. The view from up there is even more amazing. It is very windy there though - lots of sand blowing around -... More

It was after the Calderia walk trail, so we minimized the visit. this place worth a visit on it's own. very unique even for the Azores.

We visited on a windswept day when the volcanic dust scoured bare flesh more effectively than any exfoliate. The whole area is very interesting, particularly having visited Montserrat earlier in the year, a much more recent eruption and hence harder to visit. At Capelinhos one can wander over the whole area and can now just see the roofs of former... More

It was just amazing to be able to experience this volcanic ash landscape. The first 2 floors of the lighthouse are buried under this ash. The 3D video explaining the eruption of the volcanic eruptions is fantastic. We learned a lot about the formation of the Azores.
