    Worth a visit
Great panoramic views from the ramparts. Lots of stairs to climb for the best views. Reduced rate for seniors' admission - 1.40 euros. Cafe on site for quick refreshments. Limited parking in the area and very steep descent into the old town.

Fascinating castle that brings history to life
This is a wonderfully preserved castle (having had some restoration) that looks incredibly imposing as you drive towards it. Frustratingly there appeared to be nowhere to stop for a photograph. Inside the castle it is possible to walk around the walls, which we did, but there are large stretches without any safety railing and we found it intimidating. If you take children up there, keep them close! There are interesting archaeological excavations and a small but interesting museum. The underground water storage cistern that was used for the town until the 1980s is also fascinating.

    Lovely Views
We parked in the large free parking (near lidl) which was easy to get to. It is a climb to the castle so those with mobility issues may struggle. The castle is well maintained and has a shop, cafe and toilets on site. There are fantastic views and intetesting buts of history if you take the time to explore. Tickets are €2.80 at time of review, kids under 13 are free. It took less than 1 hour to go round which is fair for the very low cost but we combined with a nice stroll and meal in silves which is a really pretty area.

Very nice renovated castle. A must see.
Just for under 3 bucks, you get to see an astonishing castle from within, with ple ty of towers in all directions, and an incredible cistern big enough to hold ... anything (now an exhibition on the hispanic lynx). Part of it shows ruins of an older islamic fort. Nice views on all sides, large space inside used for concerts, and a bar awaits you in the inner space as well. Only remark is that a large portion of the waĺl ha no guardrail at all. You're (just like then) exposed to a 5 meter fall if you are careless.

    Great views and interesting area
We had a long hot walk up the cobbled roads to get to the castle but it was worth the walk. You can walk all round the walls although care is needed with children as much of it has no barrier rail. Inside the walls the grounds are laid out to show some of the remains and there is shelter provided by various fruit trees. Underground there is a small vaulted ceiling area with a display dedicated to the lynx that once were numerous in the area.

A fabulous Morris Castle with great views and a first class café
A beautiful Moorish castle with a fascinating history. Access all round the walls gives tremendous views over the city and valley. The grove of olive and fruit tress is lovely. The archaeology is fascinating, especially the huge cistern that provided r for the city until the 1980s. The café is first class. Friendly and efficient service, home-made iced soft drinks, elaborate ice creams and local food and wine. The entrance charge is low. What’s not to love?

    Worth a visit
Spent an enjoyable hour here whilst visiting Silves. It’s an easy walk around the walls and worth doing for the views. The walk up to the castle through the town is a little steep but really not that bad. We are in our 60s/70s and didn’t find it a problem. Reduced entry fee for over 65s also. Definitely worth a visit.

    A Great Place!
Wonderful castle in really great shape, plus you can do a 360 degree walk around the ramparts. Some nice excavations and history for a mere pittance of an entry fee. Definitely worth a visit and the views are spectacular!

    Beautiful castle
Beautiful Castle in charming Silves. We came by bus from Portimao and after the lovely walk uphill we found the castle. Entrance fee was cheap and the castle very interesting. Beautiful views, some stairs were but scary (or rather lack of any railing, but I survived. Pro tip - get a lemonade at the café, you will thank me later.

    Amazing castle and walls
Silves Castle is a must visit place in the Algarve. Beautiful and complete red sandstone walls, with a complete walk around the whole castle walls and towers. Most is without a handrail, so you need to be ok with heights. Good value for money and free parking nearby.

A truly impressive red sandstone castle, right on the top of the hill in the centre of Silves - much larger than you might expect, fully restored so you can safely walk right round the walls and see the fine views in every direction, with plenty of trees for shade, a good cafe in the centre of the huge courtyard, and an unexpected exhibition in the large underground former water storage cistern. Very definitely worth a visit, and tickets are very reasonable, especially by English standards.

Agree with others who have visited this week that we found the museum (combined ticket) more interesting. Pleasant enough spot. Bit of a climb to get there obviously.

The castle itself is basically just the walls now. We had the combined ticket with the museum and found that more interesting. Worth a trip if looking for something to do but wouldn’t go out of the way to visit

We were staying in nearby Estoi at the Quinta Do Mocho, a Tourismo Rural. This central located Casas De Campo was a great place to stay, good hosts, wonderful surroundings, the second time we have stayed there this year. The location was ideal, it was in the centre of many things to see and do. Silvas was only less than an hour away.
Silvas was former capital of the Kingdom of the Algarve, 1249 to 1910. The area has been habited since the Palaeolithic age, so there are many sites to see dating back into ancient history. The two sites that we visited in the town were the Cathedral of Silves, an impressive church, dating back to the 13th century, and the biggest draw, Silves Castle. This impressive structure dates back to either Roman or Visigothic times, who it said, built a fortification on top of a Lusitanian castro. It was occupied between the 8th and 13th century by the Moors, who expanded it, making it what it is today. The claim is, that it is one of Portugal's best preserved Moorish fortifications. It is a very impressive structure, build out of red sandstone.
There is a visitor and interpretive centre and the entrance fee is 2.80 euro. As well, either after or during your visit, you can stop in at the onsite Cafe Castello de Silves. This very pleasant restaurant serves up a very fine coffee, or "whatever", accompanied if you wish, by your choice of European, Portuguese or International cuisines. Also, if something more light is desire, you can choose cafe style meals or desserts, regardless, the location is pretty special and service is pleasant and prices are reasonable.
A spot to check out, on your way there or back, are the spectacular cliffs and beaches at the nearby seaside resort of Porches. Pretty nice, makes you want to move.
