Who doesn't love a vibrant and bustling farmers market? Unfortunately, on this day in mid-March, this wasn't that. The first market on the first floor seemed to winding down by late morning. As for the upstairs markets, much was dedicated to the tourist crowd.
If you go in a non-harvest season, reset your level of expectation.

Great atmosphere especially on Saturdays when farmers come to sell their produce. Produce is fresh and prices more reasonable. Great to meet the farmers. Fish section is fantastic with excellent fish freshly caught. Busy and lively with locals. Cake/ bread section sells fresh bread and good cakes/ pastry.

We went to the market one Saturday morning and I must say I was amazed by this place. I'd love if we had something similar at home. All the fresh fruit and vegetables and all the different types of fish and different cut of meat. The market is divided into sections fruit and veg section , butchers/meat section, fish section and bakery section. It's well worth a visit even just for a bit of fruit and a pastry.

We visited the new Portimao market and found it very colourful. More hygienic and clean than the old one so has lost some of its charm. Worth a visit

This is a paradise for self caterers who don't mind splashing on some luxury fish and cooking it at home. Super affordable and super fresh. The choice of fruit and vegetables is good and there's lots of good cheese too.

Portimao Municipal Market is worth a visit for the good range of fresh fruit and veg' as well as meat and especially the fish selection. Not surprising as Portimao grew up as a fishing town.

Its a great place to stock up on fresh local food. Veggies, fruit, fish, honey, sweets, herbs meat on some days. It is used by locals and visitors alike. The pricing is not particularly cheaper than in the super market, but it has not been processed or logged through the continent mostlybefore it arrives. Many languages are spoken by the merchants. Next to the obvious Portugese charming Dutch, good English and some French I heard. The bandwidth of product depends on the seasons and local availability. We visited in the beginning of summer and it was fabulous. There is convenient parking behind the market, a cafe and a snack bar.

I like markets and local produce. I went to this market to get some fresh produce for our stay in an apartment close by . It was Friday morning and with locals . I was Blown Away by the number of top class fish stalls, some really good butcher shops as well and bread and cheese stalls. I bought meet, fruit , bread and cheese . I passed on the fish because I didn’t want to be cooking fish in our apartment. Food was lovely and good value. The market is probably worth five stars however I was on Holliday and managed to go by taxi however I found it extremely difficult to get a taxi back and had to stand in 30 degree plus temperatures before one joined the rank after 35 mins. Top quality produce though !

Fresh vegetables and fish in a pleasant clean market, more choice than local supermarkets and many speak a bit of English but not all. It’s location is well back from the river and beach so a bike with panniers is needed if you are in the marina.
