- Raphael AlexandreParis, France45 contributionsTermas de Monchique MUST absolutely be renovated - basic cleanliness requirements are far from being met. This comment is related to the Spa. It was supposed to be closed for renovation works at the end of last year. It was necessary, the requirements in terms of cleanliness were no longer met. Therefore we were expecting to go into a renovated Spa , but the works have not been undertaken, it’s still in a desolate state. I’m even surprised that this Spa is authorised to operate in these poor cleanliness and hygienic conditions. Until the renovation works are not launched, it’s not a place to go.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 July 2023
- Vincent RMontreal, Canada61 contributionsOld but worth the tripWe went to the thermal baths and spent about 1.5 hours there. The main pool is interesting. Water temperature was ideal. The water jets were different than what I've seen before but efficient. Everyone needs to wear a cap (supplied), a bit weird I find. The whole design is not intuitive and has no proper signage or instructions. Safety is a problem as I slipped and almost fell on my back as I exited the 'surprise' shower. So be careful. The place is in dire need of renovations. The steam room was out of order and the sauna was occupied, quite small it seems. It was clean enough even though everything looked old.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 1 October 2023

It has beautiful little boutiques of crafts. The restaurants are a bit pricy knowing it is the tourists that will be willing to pay for it. The walk around the water source is very peaceful. Monchique is also a very nice town to visit. The restaurants are very good and not overpriced. We enjoyed our visit.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 October 2023

We went to this area where there were no real spot to visit or to see. The road from Portimano is nice and worth the time spent

We soient 2 nights at the hotel central where we stayed with half pension. We enjoyed the quiet room, the breakfast and dinner, the outdoor pool and the inner termal water pool. It is clean, the personal is kind and professional. Both dinners were pretty good, one evening included live guitar music. We had a Therapy massage which was very good.
They could improve in terms of lunch box (7.50 euros for a tiny sandwich, an apple, a pear, a juice box and 500 ml of water...) and in terms of spa (tiny and a bit too cold).
We would recommend staying at least 2 nights.

Lovely little area for a short walk and a browse around old buildings with a few crafty shops. Parking was easy in March half way down the hill and driving out along one way system could see lots more parking

We were looking forward to a few hours here having read about it in the guidebook.
The place was deserted, not in a quiet relaxing way but in an eerie abandoned way.
Only one restaurant was open and it was too expensive for a family, more a fine dining venue. We wandered in to the hotel to see if they had a restaurant and again it was derelict feeling, no water in the pools, scruffy around the edges. We did wonder if it had been closed down for a couple of years and mid renovation (which would explain a lot) but having read the reviews on here since, apparently not. Most bizarre. Shame as it looked like it would be a nice after lunch stroll had we found anywhere open.

We were amazed at this out of the way hotel. It is set in a beautiful little valley with breathtaking scenery, an outdoor pool and spa services that include a lovely mineral pool. Our room was exquisite, very well appointed. We will definitely stay again should we return to Southern Portugal!

We travelled here from Lagos and it was quite underwhelming. After a 45 minute car journey we found a rock that trickled some water, put our hand in it and was done. I can imagine it’s nice if you are staying here but not worth a car journey to visit.

Seriously considering cancelling holiday due to current ongoing wildfires. Advice please. Has anyone else been in same situation?

Unfortunately fires can break out at any time. Not so many trees here as it is more of a peak.
Family holiday booked for August (4 weeks away) just caught up on news of last years wildfires. Feeling anxious, should we consider cancelling? Honest advice please. Thank you in advance

We were in Caldas de Monchique a few weeks ago. We didn't see any evidence of fire damage to Caldas or the surrounding area. We drove in and out in 2 different directions and noticed nothing. Walked around Caldas and up to the spring, all was beautiful! It's a fabulous area, we will return. Have a great holiday!
Buongiorno, vorrei sapere se dal villaggio si vede il mare

no, la città è in una piccola valle, quindi non puoi vedere il mare

Hi SHeropa,
I am travelling through Monchique next month and have heard th walking routes through and passed the thermal springs are beautiful but have lack of information on where to go, routes ect.
Is there anywhere in particular you could recommend for stunning views/walks? Off the beaten track?
Many thanks,
A

We walked a little way from Caldes alongside a lavada. Not sure how far the trail goes. Worth trying to find a map?
