- Baggio1018London, United Kingdom318 contributionsEasy Hike, Lovely ViewWhen we visited, the waters were fairly rough so many of the boat trips were cancelled. Anyone wanting to do a coastal tour needs to re-consider/re-plan if this embargo (especially of Benagil cave) persists. We had a car so we were able to drive fairly close to the point itself, plenty of parking in the area. The hike to the lighthouse was around 15 mins from that point, fair flat so a leisurely walk even in the sun. If you go further along the coastal walk, there is a nice area to take in the sunset (but get there early as the nice spots are taken up quickly).Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023
- GlobetrottingVikingThatcham, United Kingdom3,280 contributionsBest sunsetThe evening was approaching and after a visit to the old city of Lagos, we had time only for a short stop at Ponta da Piedade. It so happened that we arrived just before sunset, and together with many other visitors we were able to enjoy the lovely sunset from the top of the cliffs at this fantastic site. We had no time to take a walk along the many footpaths prepared in the area, but that will be one of the attractions of this site. We also observed murmurations which are huge groups of starlings that twist, turn, swoop and swirl across the sky in beautiful shape-shifting clouds.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 November 2023
- Dave PulsNottingham, United Kingdom2,189 contributionsIncredible viewsAmazing place with many viewpoint and kilometres of good quality boardwalks. Good cafe near the lighthouse. Free parking and free to enter. There is almost too much to see, so we couldn't visit all of the viewpoints. The best place is down many flights of steps at sea level, near the lighthouse.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 15 February 2024
- WaddlerYork, United Kingdom12,491 contributionsPleasant winters walkParked at the new car park a few hundred metres from the Ponta. You can either take the traffic-free road down, or else what looks like a new boardwalk along the coast. Note that the various boardwalk viewpoints generally stop a safe distance from the cliffs meaning you don't get great views from most of them. People were leaving the boardwalks to get the views. At the end at the Ponta you can get good views from the official paths and steps though. The scenery is interesting - worth coming I'd say, but if your choice is this or the Seven Valleys walk, then I'd do sections of the Seven Valleys walk.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 February 2024
- GigifromAZPortimao, Portugal25 contributionsStunning views! For anyone that loves nature, you must visit this special place. The Ponta da Piedade is a walk along the cliffs of Lagos. The entire walk can be done on a lovely boardwalk to make it safe and easy. The views are stunning!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 March 2024
- ThoLondon, Canada32 contributionsNext land Azores and North AmericaWell designed stairs and walkways provide excellent and safe vantage points. Prepare for a few hours and make sure to go down the stairs at the lighthouse to water level and feel the Atlantic’s strength. Small cafe available at point.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 March 2024
- marxbros61 contributionsGreat afternoon out - spectacular viewsLovely views - quiet at this time of the year but probably difficult to take a photo when it's busy in high season. We walked through the back streets of the town to the car park at Ponta da Piedade and then back to Lagos on the boardwalk. We didn't think the walking trail was very well signposted at some parts so possibly better with a map. However the whole experience was great.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 May 2024
- illuminated2010Canada91 contributionsGood HikeNice hike from Lagos old city. Long board walk available with various lookout points. Worth a visit. Make sure you wear shoes as it is quite a long walk from Lagos old city.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 August 2024
- John B11 contributionsAmazing stroll with breathtaking vistas.Occasionally rather busy. Without viewing everything, you could easily spend an hour here. Kayaks and tourist boats are frequently spotted peering down into the little, picturesque coves below. The sea is a really attractive green/blue color. Gorgeous at dusk.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 August 2024

I’ve seen many pictures of Ponta de Piedade and really wanted to visit, but was let down by the amount of people down there.
It was hard to move around because there was no type of control of people going down. People arrive in boats too, which just adds more traffic and takes away from any good views.
Would recommend going here very early in the morning before boat rides begin or people set about their day. You’ll most likely get the sun shining there and uninterrupted crystal clear waters.
Alternatively, we took a kayak excursion the next day and viewed it from there and was much better (pictured).

Spectacular view hot busy trail. You can usually find parking at the beginning of the trail but plenty of people were turning around driving down road looking for a spot. Great news is that clearly the local government has invested in building a raised boardwalk so you won’t lose your way though plenty of people were escaping from fenced boardwalk to take their selfies on the cliffs edge. There is a fantastic view west of Lagos once you pass the lighthouse and walk to the high point. Worth 30-40 minutes but unless you’re making it out for the fantastic sunset you wouldn’t make a day of it.

A lovely place to watch the sunset! I drove there with my friend who has a car and is a local and showed me this spot. After we got to the lighthouse, we walked to the right side and there is a wooden path which is very poetic and there were some benches for people to sit and watch the sunset. Previously, I had gone there and did not turn right but left and walked around to have a closer look of the rock formations and also saw very big set of stairs going down but apparently there was no beach there. I went shortly after lockdown opening of Portugal so there were no boat tours in whole Algarve.

This is a spot we returned to again and again during our four day stay in Lagos--at sunset, sunrise and in between. It was breathtaking from every vantage point and the vistas incredible. Sadly, it rained during much of our time there, but Ponta da Piedade did not disappoint even in a downpour. It is so worth visiting. We could have spent more time wandering the boardwalks and paths. We did eventually take the steps all the way down to the water, and that was worthwhile. Do not miss this snapshot of nature at its finest.

Lovely walks rain or shine along the cliff edges on the outskirts of Lagos. There you will witness the interesting geography that makes this region well known. See cliffs, birds and grottos along the way. Park in the parking lot near the lighthouse or along the side of the road between the O Camilo restaurant and the lighthouse. Wheel chair accessible along the boardwalk but unless you go off the main trails (dangerous) there is much less to see. Don’t miss the steps leading down to the water near the lighthouse on the city side. There is a very picturesque grotto there.
Get to the beach via stairs near O Camilo restaurant. Bring your binoculars and camera and a hat. No shade.

Next to Lagos (it takes less than half-hour to walk from the city to there) this kind of sightseeing point allows you to overlook great rock formations, coming from the sea, or implanted in the sea; it depends the way you want to look at them. When in Lagos, don’t miss it. Enjoy!

Beautiful coast, the beaches we visited are Praia do Camilo and Praia do Ana. The water is very cold (ocean) and rich in seagrass. In August the two beaches are very crowded, staying there can be problematic.
Note on the context: a place that, if it had remained wild, would have preserved the charm it deserves intact. Unfortunately, building speculation compared to that on the Lazio coast and high respect for nature is destroying this place. Hideous gigantic buildings that are difficult to digest.
In 5 years it will all be buried under concrete and tourists like flies.

Let's start with an objective fact. Probably a few years ago, maybe a dozen, it was certainly a wonderful place on a naturalistic as well as landscape level. Now let's jump to the present day: it's a construction site.
The access roads are closed, the car parks are earthen yards with open-air excavations that are not cordoned off. An infinite number of cranes are building from nothing a row of 8-storey buildings that disfigure the landscape, rich people's villas built close to the cliff. Two accessible beaches, overcrowded in the tourist months and exposed to the east, so in the shade almost immediately in the afternoon. They are preparing wooden runners but at first they seem like an unfinished work and everyone is walking outside the runners in the middle of the vegetation, with a myriad of paths interrupting it. There are papers and rubbish scattered in the bushes. Then you look down from the cliffs and towards the sea and the regret is even greater because it would be a wonderful place if it were protected on a naturalistic level. Sin.
The expectations were different but there are many no...

This is the second time we have done this kayaking tour. The guys are so friendly and good fun. Particularly Martin today who had to work extra hard as there was a very difficult person in the group who could easily have wreaked havoc but he dealt with her very well. I’d highly recommend !

Hallo CinMDQ
sorry für die späte Antwort.
Es sind einige wenige Kilometer zu Fuß - Weg auf der Straße. Ab einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt kann man an der Steilküste entlang. Das lohnt sich.

I’ve heard the walkways are closed at the moment? Or is there still some access?

We are going to Lagos, Portugal late December 2021 to January 2022 - are tourist activities opened for business OR does Lagos tourist attractions close for winter/Christmas/off season?

Are the small boats that tour the caves still running? (Early sept 2020). We visited a couple of years ago and walked down the steps at the point and took a boat tour; just walk up and pay... are they running at the moment? Prefer to do that than a tour out of Lagos...

Sorry. I don’t know. If I walk by again I will check.

Only if you follow signs back into town & then to the beaches. You cannot swim from the actual spot that is Ponte de Piedade. It is all steep cliffs. Absolutely no jumping because they would have to pick up pieces at the bottom. Drive back into town please and follow the signs.

Hi, we will be visiting Ponta da Piedade in the middle of march on a friday afternoon. Will there be small boats there on-site that we don't have to book ahead, or are those only an option during tourist season? Also, anyone know of any kayak tours that (safely) allow children under 5 to Ponta Da Piedade? We have a 5 yr old and a 3 yr old. Thanks
Written 29 January 2020
Hi there! As far as I know, there are no boats on-site where you just can hop in for a tour. I think most of them are in Lagos Marina. I suggest that you ask your hotel for tours. They can help you book one. Or check tour agencies by the marina.

Hi guys, I'll be staying in Faro in August for a few days and wish to see Lagos. Is there a train from Faro to Lagos ??
Written 1 August 2019
Hi, this is from a local website and not my own words: Faro is connected to Lagos by the Algarve regional railway and Lagos is the final station along the line. The journey takes 1 hour 45 minutes and a single ticket costs €7.40. ... These tickets cannot be pre-booked as this is a regional train, but there is always plenty of space on the train.
