Portuguese Literature Nobel Prize Winner José Saramago used to say "you can see all of the Earth from Marvão". He was right, apart from the literary exaggeration, that you'll easily pardon the moment you climb to the top of the Castle. Astonishing.

The castle costs 1.50 euros per person with a small map. There is a large, eerie cistern down the first stairs you see. Then inside there are a few arts and crafts/souvenir shops with reasonable prices. The main attraction is climbing up to the top of both towers - one at the northern end, which might be the highest point... More

Set on the top of a hill the castle gives a wonderful panorama of the surrounding area which must be 300-400 metres below. The structure is well preserved and you can walk all around the battlements and climb to the top of the tower. Very reasonably priced and well worth the visit.

We really enjoyed this gorgeous castle in the hills adjacent to the Spanish border. It is much larger than expected and the gardens are lovingly maintained to add to its beauty. You can walk the walls and imagine fighting off any invaders that couldn't possibly penetrate its defenses. It was a very enjoyable afternoon exploration.

The best thing is the location. There some cafe's and restaurant with open seating area facing a fantastic view. There is also a beautiful garden at the upper side of the village facing the other side of the view. The village itself is old and quite any much to do (maybe it's more busy in summer time)

Very well preserved castle. Charming walk in the premesis and around it. The views are superb. The town is also very charming. Marvao is definitely worth a visit.

If you come by car park by the gate and then through the gate go to the tourist office. Walk up the road keeping to the right and that will bring you to the centre. Then you can go either way to the Poussada or to the castle. Some great views.

This is one of the most amazing site we have visited on our 3 weeks trip to Portugal. Truly magical, with expensive gorgeous views to the surrounding countryside from every vantage point. Take you time, stop often to admire the formidable views and make sure to explore every nook and crannies. Most people miss the primitive bathroom located behind the... More

If you look to this castle from the bottom of the city, you will swear that there's nothing there...you have to pay attention to see that "small" military construction. But when you arrive to the castle door, you believe that only DEFENSE was the right word to describe it. Inside those stone walls, a beautiful small village with white walls... More
