If you have any interest in archeology it’s worthwhile going here to see these 95 standing stones in a circle arranged for astronomical observations of the solstices. I recommend going with Ebora Megalithica which is owned and run by archeologist Mario Carvalho who is a...More

These standing stones (ca 5000 BC) form one of the largest megalithic sites in Europe. We had a car and the signage was good; the roads not so much.

Evora is a place we passed thru on our way from Lisbon airport to the northern town of Amares Portugal. It is definately rich in history both roman ruins, churches and the monoliths of Almendes Cromlech. I was lucky enough to visit the Avebury circles...More

To think that people were living on these hills thousands of years ago is pretty incredible...The cromlech is worth a detour on your way in or out of Évora.

We made this a quick stop on our way into town. It is worth the small diversion to see this historic site. It is well signed, and the path from the parking lot is wide and mostly level.

Take the small group tour with Mario to see these amazing megaliths. He brings it to life with his stories and explanations. This was a highlight of our trip to Portugal.

Walk around these 4 - 6,000 year old arrangements of giant boulders and contemplate the ancient humans who somehow placed them there and how you fit into this cosmic scheme.

OK, I am French, we have a fair share of megalithic monuments (though I have not seen many myself), but honestly, never saw anything like this cromlech. Megalithic monuments are usually funerar, this one isn't, it seems. It is vast and impressive. You need to...More

This was one of three sites visited on our "Megalithic Tour of Evora." We usually do such sites on our own, but the benefit of having a real local archeologist show us around and explain many of the site's features in-situ made the visit so...More

We enjoyed wandering among these stone formations that are described as 2,000 years older than Stonehenge; although, the markings that do remain on some of the stones are hard to see. One can only imagine the history of these stones, who built them, and what...More

We visited the site with a very competent guide. He picked us up with a driver at our hotel along with a few other persons coming from other hotels. He knows the way and the site being an archeologist himself. The... More

No public transport, and it's well off the beaten track. We had our own car, but car hire is cheap in Portugal (if you don't do it through an hotel) - probably less than a taxi. Well worth the trek, however you get there. We... More
