3 euro to visit. Its quite old-fashioned, all artefacts, no history, but its got lots of vehicles, and nearly everything is labelled in English. A bonus is the access to the fortifications in that corner of the city, good to unravel how they all work.

Also need to visit is the “Military Museum” located in the “Quartel do Casarão”». The name of the barracks was placed in memory of a large building that Cosmander, a Dutch Jesuit, had demolished in the 17th century. In the museum you can find all kind of things related and used by the military of Portugal. Those things are placed as well on the inside and on the outside. It will take some time to visit the complete museum, but it is worth every step. Certainly for people who love the military stuff.

We went here because another visitor the day before was raving about the place. Lucky them had a free entry as it was a public holiday.
We visited the next morning so had to pay a few euros to get in. Overall it wasn't bad value for money, but was a bit like one of those meals where you feel full but soon after are hungry again.
There's lots to see, and you get a real soldier to guide you round as he unlocks and locks various doors on the tour. He doesn't act as guide though and the leaflets offered only really talk about the buildings etc.
There are though quite good signs in portugese and english on most exhibits.
the first section were once stables then when horses phased out they became barracks and ablutions blocks; now, housing various sections on horses, communications and medical matters. A mixed bag but facinating enough.
Strangely we were told we couldn't take pictures but I read reviews of others and they were allowed?
The indoor vehicle section was facinating, does anyone know why a lot of cars and jeeps have 2 steering wheels and other controls?
And they have a genuine 1956 Hillman Minx, by first ever car, probably the only one still in existance today ...

Firstly this museum was open when others weren’t. We were really surprised at how much time we spent there and what a unique and interesting collection we found. We loved all the horse tack. I took loads of photos of all the various equipages used to pull guns and supplies during various conflicts. Interesting to see the head collar they used for euthanising the creatures when no gun was to hand. Saddles bearing machine guns. Gas masks for horses. The communication section was brilliant - from the earliest semaphore used in the Peninsula Wars to modern day field telephones. Large collection of wonderful vehicles. I could go on ... I’ve been to many military museums and here I saw a lot of well-displayed artefacts that I’ve never seen before. Not all roped off either. If you’ve got even a passing interest in these subjects then factor in an hour or two for a visit.

this large museum has a lot of potential with a ton of exhibits on all things military and the tanks on show and many other military vehicles from the past were an eye opener and worth the admission costs alone.

We just did the ‘Outside’ section which was only E1 each and we were able to wander about a large section of the old fortifications which we found interesting. There’s we’re some good views of the city and the Northern and Southern forts.

This is worth a look, but not probably a detour! The museum is housed in the old barracks but there is too many exhibits of horse reins, saddles etc.... The last few rooms are more interesting, but it's not very inspiring and young children would get bored easily!

This is a really large museum, well-stocked with all sorts of weaponry and historical objects. The collection of old cannon is impressive as are the tanks they are and have restored.

This museum is rather small but still I got a feeling of great potential. It doesn’t tell the history of the city or its military but rather shows parts of military historical items in more or less three different subjects – Horses, Doctors and a surprisingly large exposition of communication equipment. Set in the old barracks the exposition is airy and you can get very close to the object – in fact there are no fences, glas walls or anything preventing you from touching. Of course – you’re not allowed but still, you get very close to the things, which is nice. You’ll need a guide to open the museum so when you arrive you’ll get accompanied by a soldier which guides you between the different areas. On entrance fee to se the expositions and another to enter the outside area which provide a couple of canons to see and some good views over towards Fortress Santa Luzia in the south.

I have seen my fair share of military museums and this one is not much compared to the fortifications in which it is included. Worth it for the curiosity value but little else.
