I wasn't too sure what to expect with this museum but it sounded interesting and I was surprised by the amount of information and items in the fairly small museum. Its fascinating and also a little bit terrifying seeing all the different torture implements. The information panels were good for historical info as well as anecdotes about certain uses of the items. Certainly an eye opener and maybe not for the very squeamish as some of the displays don't hold back

The museum has the perfect location and atmosphere for its subject. The employee at the counter was extremely friendly and helpful. I thought the price was appropriate for the museum. Although it is smaller in scale, and rather cramped, it is certainly generously filled. Everything has information available and the music playing in the background, although sometimes stopping abruptly, pulled you back in time and was a bonus to the experience. However, due to the small space and its location in Bruges, it can become busy when larger groups or several people enter behind you or in front of you. If you are someone who reads everything and tries to record it, you will soon notice that your rap ends up in the middle of those groups. Apart from that, I certainly thought it was an interesting and valuable trip. A downside: the toilets are dirty.

Surprising museum but really nice to see. The setting is nice since it is an old prison and some of the walls are from the period. Entrance at 9€ is quite correct, a place to visit during a short stay in Bruges

I know that's the purpose of the museum, but... It's really horrible! ! ! It's crazy, what human beings have invented to torture themselves, the museum itself is very pleasant to visit. The prices are not too expensive, and we understand what torture is… The staff is very friendly. I had a pleasant visit, whether it was seeing the famous chairs of the inquisition or the famous iron virgin… A bloody visit 🩸 awaits you 😈!

Im a 17 year old girl and went on my own, not expecting much to be honest after reading the reviews. I was pleasantly surprised - I managed to be in there for about an hour and it was a small, but well informed little museum. Yes, it is not like other larger museums with huge amounts of in depth info , but for what it is, I thought it was entertaining and informative (translations included + a timeline of torture through the ages..) I thought it would only show the basic , well known torture devices but there were many that I had not heard of , which was interesting. I would say 7 euros is quite expensive for a student but what can you do? It isn't a must here in Brugge but if you run out of things to do , definitely have a visit here

Small but interesting place for those who like to read small explanatory panels and like to discover elements of history. It is only a basement with 4/5 rooms where different elements of torture are presented and questioned used in the Middle Ages/modern times. This may be a little expensive for the experience. Beware we were with two young teenagers who are interested in History and studious so liked it but we were accompanied by a 9 year old child yet courageous, interested and loving adventure and who was the instigator of this visit , who did not appreciate it at all and preferred to go out during the visit fearing to make cashmeres. Not everyone’s into the dark side of history, but compared to Granada, this is tame. If you’ve seen a 1638 witch’s scale then you’ve gotten a taste of the Spanish Inquisition. Let’s not forget Deutsch Strasbourg (1349). These “instruments” travelled far & wide with the Portuguese, who made friends with Japan or Indian Mughals, and on to New France (America & Quebec)—not limited after the 1400s to Oude Steen/ “Old Stone.” They were used till almost the mid-1800s in Mexico before enslaved peoples achieved liberation—hence, Emancipation Day’s a big deal (almost 2 centuries in Canada)—where Martin Luther King dropped in for yearly celebrations; then decades later, Emancipation & desegregation happens in the U.S. Next up, capital punishment: the guillotine & electric chair. Get ready!

Saw this on a rainy day in Bruges. The museum is housed in an old building and consists of a few rooms. But there is a lot crammed into those few rooms. It was really interesting and somewhat disturbing as to how people's minds worked to come up with the multitude of ways of torturing people. The history was interesting and the displays were well set out.

A really interesting museum which we stumbled across accidentally and decided to go in as we felt €9 was pretty reasonable. Lots to read and learn about, with plenty of devices to see. Expect it to take around 30 mins to get round if you take your time.
