I stayed on the city edge, and this was my walking entrance to head into Market Square. Pedestrian walkway alongside, but vehicles had to alternate between coming & going access.

The Smedenpoort is one of the four remaining city gates of Bruges . It was built in1297 - 99 and then rebuilt in 1367 - 68 by Jan Slabbaert and Mathias Saghen. It was rebuilt several times. It is completely surrounded by water.

Visited Bruges for one day only during my Xmas Markets trip, and I was entering the town through that gate. Looks really good at night with the light on.

Definitely worth the visit, especially for people who come from non-european countries and therefore, aren't used to this kind of construction. Beautiful and very well mantained.
