The Brugse Vrije is the former law court of Bruges. It now houses written history of Bruges as the city archives are based here. Take a walk through the old court to the renaissance hall, which was once the alderman's chamber. Here, the highlight is a monumental 16th century wood, marble, and alabaster fireplace known as the Emperor Charles V fireplace, designed by Lanceloot Blondeel. (tickets via Stadhuis)

The tour guide explained that this was the former Hall of Justice. I assume that means it was a court building. It is very fancy for a court and is really a beautiful building. There is a lot to see in this square with the town hall and the blood of Christ.

My wife spent a couple of days in Bruges (Brugge). We had purchased a multi-entry ticket, which for Euro 20 per person (regrettably no discount for seniors), turned out to be good value for money and covered a dozen museums and places of interest, including the Brugse Vrije, which is the former law court located adjacent to the Stadhuis in... There is a lot of history here in the artwork and carvings. The wood carvings above the fireplace are very intricate.

This building was built in 1727. It was used as a courthouse from 1795 to 1984. Amazing amount of wood carvings (cod pieces) in one large room. There are also lots of paintings of Charles V and family. There is also an historic painting by Van Tilborgh, which shows the alderman’s chamber in session.

This is just one room, the entrance is the same as for the city archive (stadsarchief), located next to the town hall, and nearby the holy blood chapel. The entrance to the museum (2 rooms) in the town hall includes also entrance to this room. The reason to go is the amazing carved chimney piece, with in the centre emperor... More

This sight is also covered by the Bruges museum pass. It is just one room and it was the former law court of Bruges. It has an over the top carved fireplace surround. There are also some interesting paintings in the rest of the room. We were given I pods that explains these additional features. Since it is only one... More

It was on the same ticket as another attraction but not obvious to find (and no one said when we bought our ticket). A beautiful room documenting the freedom of Brugse in paintings vs, carvings and a helpful guide in several languages. I loved it, but it doesn't take long to see.

Brugse Vrije, also referred to in English as Liberty of Bruges (€4 per person). This is a historic chamber situated in the corner of Burg square in the city centre of Bruges. Opening Hours are 9.30-12.30pm and 1.30-5pm daily. Historically, Brugse Vrije served as the local court of Justice for nearly two hundred years (1795-1984). Today it is a well... More

Not much to see but worth it for the 16th C wood carved chimney piece around the fireplace. Beautiful!

One room with a fireplace. That is what it is but the fire place is beautifully ornate, carved out of wood. Use the audio guide to discover it's meaning and history. This is part of the Stadhuis so you buy the tickets there to see this. I had a Bruges City Card.
