Seen from Spiegelrei or Spinolarei the Burghers’ Lodge (Poortersloge), with its characteristic spire, makes for an iconic, picture-perfect view. It is definitely the visual highlight of Jan Van Eyckplein. Built between 1395 and 1417 in what was then a very busy international port area, it housed the meetings of prominent citizens with their trade partners and the Knightly Society of the White Bear, which organized tournaments in Bruges until the 15th century. The famous emblem of the Society, an upright bear holding its coat of arms, is still to be found in a niche on the corner of Academiestraat. In later years, the lodge served, among others, as an art school (1720–1890) and the city archives (1912-2012). Today, it is a contemporary arts venue. The Latin inscription over the monumental door at Academiestraat 18 "Ut phoenix ex cenere su Brugensium dono revivisco" (Like a Phoenix from its ashes, I rise thanks to the liberality of the people of Bruges) and the date 1755 remind of the fire that destroyed the building in 1755. The present-day appearance is the result of modifications made in the 19th century.

This is one of the beautiful historic buildings at Jan Van Eyckplein that is a delight to view while spending time on the school. It was commissioned by the Burgesses of Bruges and was built between 1395 and 1417 at a time when this location when was a very busy commercial port for international trade.

There appear to be times of the year when Poortersloge is open for exhibitions and special events, allowing visitors a chance to see the interior. Otherwise, take a few minutes to enjoy the exterior, with an ornate facade, featuring small niches with statue figures. One that is particularly interesting is at the lower corner of the building. It is a standing bear holding a shield with the Coat of Arms. Definitely worth spending a few minutes to view Poortersloge when you pass through Jan Van Eyckplein.

High up on his perch, the Little Bear of Bruges sits in a wall niche on Poorters Loge. He holds the coat of arms of the Noble Company of the White Bear. The bear is Bruges’ “oldest inhabitant” and is sometimes decorated for special festive occasions. He is my favourite statute in Bruges!

The Poorter's Loge, or Merchants' Lodge is an interesting building located in Jan van Eyck Square. The rich Merchant's club , the Society of the White bear , met here and you can still see a white bear on the facade of the building.

Poortersloge (The Burghers' Lodge) is a protected monument building at Jan van Eyck Square in Bruges. It is a beautiful building standing directly west of the Jan Van Eyck Statue and boasts a most impressive facade, well worth spending a few minutes to enjoy while spending time in this area of the city.

The building dates back to the end of the 14th-century when this location was at the commercial heart of the the city, an important point of international trade took place here. The exterior features a ornate facade adorned with statue figures as well as a slender tower. Make sure to find the famous 'het beertje van de loge (the bear of loggia) while viewing the exterior of Poortersloge as well.

This pretty lodge building was erected in the 15th century and was used as the meeting point and conferences of the society of white beer. Later on in its history it was used as an art exhibition hall.
