It no longer has the appearance of a central square, but continues to have, especially on the north side, an airy perspective like no "Friday market" square in Ghent. Add to this the buildings, original or reconstructed, in perfect Flemish style that surround it, and the panorama of the Gandave "three towers" that stand out on its horizon coming from one of the streets that emerge from it. At night, everything becomes infinitely more beautiful, and the atmosphere becomes magical, among the places that best benefit from Ghent's fantastic night lighting. In particular, note the narrow street to the north surrounded by unusually similar buildings, a succession of antique shops.

This square is well worth walking around it, you will find many things to do that will keep you busy for a good 90 minutes or longer. Expect culinary and historic experiences and incidentally, the Patershol is right next to it....just across a little bridge.

We didn’t see this place at its best as market was packing up and it was very wet and miserable. I guess I might rate this higher had it been a sunny day and more vibrant. Check market times as it appeared to end early.

This square got its name for the Friday markets. It is in the heart of Ghent just off the main area. There are lots of good restaurants around the square. You can also watch life pass by as people hustle about and kids play.

A distinctive square surrounded by a traditional town hall and art nouveau facades. It has hosted a weekly market since 1199. Benches are spread around the place for seating, and there are restaurants and cafes overlooking the square.

This was recommended by a local friend so we went and found various items for sale, sort of a flea market. Practical for shopping. On a big square with lots of places to eat and drink around.

We came to this Square purely by chance, while wandering the streets of Gent. We were glad we did because there is so much there of significance and also the place itself is full of shops, restaurants and so much more. We have ever been to Gent once, on this day trip only, and in fact we have only ever visited Belgium once, and on this occasion we enjoyed the day immensely. Vrijdagmarkt has a bit of a dark past as well. It used to be a place of public executions, in the old days, with the last one being in 1863! On Fridays and Saturdays there are markets being held which make each day special. Gent was an important textile market centre, in the 14th century, back in the middle Ages and during the Hundred Years War which involved France and England, (funnily enough, the war lasted 116 years from 1337 to 1453!) one of the local heroes, Jacob van Artevelde, managed to break the boycott of English wool exports, which eventually benefited Gent and revived its textile industry. Jacob van Artevelde was actually killed during a riot at the time, but the locals honoured him with a statue which can be seen in the middle of Vrijdagmarkt. Some of the architecture in the Vrijdagmarkt is lovely, but the Little Tower building is the only original 15th century survivor. Most other buildings are much more modern. There is a large and imposing building which apparently belongs to the Socialist movement and with the words Bond Moyson on the façade, which was actually built in the early 20th century.

We arrived at this Market just as it was closing down! We had been wandering around the streets of the city for several hours and then, quite by chance, we stumbled across the Friday Market at this beautiful square. This is a great idea which takes place in many European cities. The locals obviously are the ones who really benefit. As for tourists, well, they just walk around taking photos (as we did...) and invariably getting in the way of the real shoppers! Nevertheless it was a lot of fun, for us as tourists, anyway!

The best open-air supermarket in Gent on fridays. The place to get fresh fish, fruit & vegetables etc. Also organic fruit & vegetables, organic goat's cheese in various different forms. Also worth visiting the flea market on the St. Jacobs next to the Friday Market.

I wasn't aware this market is crowdy with locals. The vegetables and fruit are great and I all the terraces were full booked around the place. The gave even discounts at the end around 12:00 for friendly people, I suppose....
