A good place for a concert and a great idea for recycling part of the old abbey complex. This used to be an abbey where nuns took care of sick and old patients. Now reused, this building for music and concerts. Brilliant.

After years of restauration, Bijloke is now working on its inner garden. Almost finished. I think. But more importantly; the cultural programe they are offering is impressive. Yesterday we attended a concert with Rach 3 by a Queen Elisabeth Contest winner. Excellent acoustics. Good organisation. Cozy atmosphere.

The Bijloke Music Centre made a huge impression on me - it's a fairly old, medieval building, first designed as a hospital and then transformed to be a music hall. So you can imagine - the design and the atmosphere of the venue is a great adding to a good concert. I was there for the Great British Film Music Gala during Film Fest Gent - the music and the venue totally go together.

This old hospital contains the main concert hall for classical music in Gent. The old building are surrounded by modern architecture (on of the building is containing the STAM - city museum) making it one of the nicest concert halls i've ever visited.

Ghent is a city of concert halls. This is probably the oldest one as it dates from the 13th century. For centuries it was a hospital, but two decades ago the hall became a concert hall. Most of the programming is classical music, but there's also jazz and world music inside. Check their site if you want to put some culture in your Ghent stay.

One annoying thing however, the main hall has a draught inside. If you are sensible to that, bring something with you to protect yourself.

The music is great, the building is breathtaking. Quality entertainment in a wonderful setting. Enjoy classical music (from the west but also from other cultures) and jazz.

Forget about 21st century designer concert halls. Ghent transformed a medieval hospital into a modern concert room.
And if you get bored by the classical music, lift up your head for the fascinating skeleton roof. It will make you think of an upturned boat.

What a nice idea to show part of the old abbey complex to the public as a cultural place. This is a pleasant music venue. We listened to the jazz duo Koi Collective. My visit to the mid-century medical room was not successful because it was too late, but evening visits around the garden are still possible.
