    Great visit!
This was an awesome stop in Ghent! You have to get the audio tour, as it’s included with the ticket price and provides a great (and funny) insight into the castle. Without it, I don’t think we would have gotten much out of the visit. We spent about an hour here, and it was awesome! The castle is very cool, and there is a lot of history attached to it. Absolutely worth a stop!

Going Back in Time with the Countt
This castle is right in the heart of Ghent. I highly recommend the FREE audio tour. Enter the castle, pay (15 euro adults) and head to the gift shop to receive your remote audio. The narrator is hilarious, and he takes you through the history and special rooms of the castle. Plan on at least an hour. Wear good walking shoes & be able to climb steep, spiral staircases.

    Worth a visit!
Worth a visit when you are in Ghent. We took the tram #1 here from the train station - make sure you know which direction the tram is going in! The audio guide was humorous and it was fun to walk around the castle and learn about the different areas. Great views from the rooftop! Also, worth it to check out the lower level accessible right next to the ticket counter.

    Worth a Visit
Very interesting castle with a lot of history. It’s been nicely restored. Lots do see a snide and outside. It’s definitely worth a visit. The only downside was the audio tour. They tried to do something unique but the comedian doing the commentary missed the mark.

    Worth a visit
Very impressive building, brought to life with an amusing irreverent audio tour from a Ghent comedian. Great views across Ghent from the roof too. Entrance fee covered by the Ghent card too if you get one of those…

Audio tour not to be missed
Visited today with my 2 sons (18/20). Castle is in fantastic state of repair. Included audio tour is tongue-in-cheek and highly entertaining. Beautiful views of beautiful Ghent from the roof terrace. Well worth the entrance fee.

    A really good surprise
It is some years since I’ve been to this castle and it’s changed!! This was very unexpected!! Of course the castle itself hasn’t changed by the experience certainly has. Gone is the gory torture museum and whilst it is acknowledged it is not a major focus. You do need the audio guide. Some might consider they have rather “dumbed down” the history, and at first I was laughing at, rather than with, the commentary. But by the end of our visit I was enjoying the humour and we left having learnt perhaps more than from a dry commentary. And we then did do a quick Google after to learn a little more! Well done Gravensteen!

Cool castle and grounds with hilarious audio tour
Visit just for the audio guide ! If you don't have a sense of humour then DO NOT get the audio guide. It is by a local Belgian comedian and is very informative and also very very funny. A very welcome departure from the usual boring and dry audio guides we have heard countless times on our trips abroad. 2 small points: The steps inside are quite steep so do be careful. And also just as you leave the last stage of the tour it is a steep drop-off to the ground below - with no guard rail present.

A well reserved 10th Century moated castle and beautiful Ghent landmark.
When visiting Ghent for a few hours as we travelled across Belgium we walked past the stunningly well reserved 10th Century moated castle that is the Gravensteen. The current castle dates from 1180 and was the residence of the Counts of Flanders until 1353. It was subsequently re-purposed as a court, prison, mint, and even as a cotton factory. It was restored over 1893–1903 and is now a museum and a major landmark in the city. We did not have time to go inside the museum but we did walk through the giant front gate into the courtyard and also all around to the rear of the castle. It really is an lovely landmark and an attractive site to see. Well worth visiting. If you are in a car I can recommend parking at the Parking Karmelieten on Burgstraat 46/102, 9000 Gent, as it is safe, cheap and only a 300m walk from the car park to the castle.

Beautiful castle, stunning views of the city
This castle is awesome! It’s worth going here just for the castle. On a sunny day it’s beautiful, great views of the whole city and it’s a large castle too so plenty to see. You’d be mad to miss out on this. It’s fantastic!

The audio tour was funnier than we expected. Although it could waffle and go off topic quite a bit on some of the stops. Most would probably enjoy the non-PG quirky humour.

Would recommend entering the next number on the tour handheld audio device before you arrive if you want to finish your visit and 18-stop audio tour in under 2 hours.

Another on my list of highly recommended sites to check out. I mean castle tours are usually not a tough sells. In this case, what put things over for me was the accompanying audio tour. Rather than dryly present the facts, they take a comedic approach from the point of view of a (former) court jester.

Beyond the history of the Castle of the Counts, you'll also hear of all the various methods of torture at the time. The self guided tour will take you about 45-50 minutes if you listen to the entire "show", which of course I recommend!

Excellent venue. Loved the free/included audio tour. A comical way to learn history. Highly recommended. Note for those challenged by stairs, there are many. At least two spiral stone staircases (1-way up, another way down) + other stairs. Great view from the top. We very much enjoyed our visit. (2 Older Americans).

This is a large fortification with plenty to see. The audio guide provides an hilarious tour of each room with plenty of useful information interwoven with stories that help breathe life into the structure. The person on the audio guide clearly had a good time recording it and some parts are possibly not entirely suitable for children. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I guess by now I was a bit tired of cathedrals and so the castle was an interesting alternative. The castle itself looks very imposing, especially in its location besides the canal. The tour of the castle included an audio recording, narrated by a comedian who gave his personal interpretation of the history of the castle and its occupants. There were definitely some humorous parts which got us bursting out in laughter, though I would agree with some reviewers that certain parts were a bit longwinded and not relevant to the history of the castle. The whole tour took us about an hour. I found the open air toilet the most interesting – it was built into one of the turrets and the discharged material was meant to fall straight into the moat below. The comedian joked that the citizens could decipher from the faeces what their monarch had eaten.

Great to look through this castle and learn all about its history. Close to other places to visit also. Great views from the top of the town and lots of places to eat and drink outside around castle. We walked from train station to it for half hour. Good entry price to Castle.

Probably the best audio guide tour I made so far. Gravensteen itself is pretty impressive but the way Wouter (our audio tour guide) tells the story is awesome. Hilarious, interesting, sometimes emotional. Perfect for every one.

We love castles. This was a very nice one with a great audio tour. The audio tour is a little long but interesting, although told for children, but ok. There is a small but nice museum.
