Huge botanical garden with a great diversity of plants. A real pleasure to see places like this knowing that there are a lot of plants threatened with extinction. Entrance is free and the place is very relaxing.

Walking through Citadel Park from the railway station we decided, on the spur of the moment, to have a look at the nearby University Botanical Garden. In these Covid times, it’s advisable to make a reservation to visit the three greenhouses (Victoria, subtropical and tropical greenhouse) but we were allowed in without because there were few people inside. Entrance is free. We enjoyed having the place almost to ourselves to stroll among the lush vegetation. In one of the greenhouses a big basin was completely drained and several gardeners were at work. November is clearly not the best time to visit. We will definitely give this place another try in spring.

free enterance - This was my favorite place between 2007 and 2010 to get a break when i was studying in Ghent, i think i visited the garden and the serres about 100 times. The air inside the serres is so pure and moist, it is really like you are walking in the jungle. A lot beautiful plants in there :)
SECRET SPOT ==> While you are here, get into the University building itself by the front doors and take the elevator to the top floor, then get out and take the few stairs left, there is a door that you should open to get onto the roof top - I used to go there for smoking sigarettes. This will get you the best view of Ghent, no doubt!

These botanical gardens are freely accessible and a delight on a rainy Belgian day. I enjoyed the smells, the tropical humidity and the relaxed atmosphere that was abundantly present. I can definitely recommend the people to take some time and dream away in those glass houses!

The botanical garden of Ghent is a remainder of the rich history intertwining Ghent University with the city. Originally the garden was part of the Citadel Park and connected through water. Nowadays the botanical garden is maintained as part of the University and continues to serve as a research facility. The garden is open to public and entrance is free of charge. The staff in charge is very friendly.

You could come here every day and always see, feel, smell, ... something different. The people who maintain, cultivate, do research in this garden do this with love and knowledge. You 'll find a big garden in the middle of Ghent. Easily to find by car, bike, train, bus or by food. Next by is the big green lung, the Citadelpark.
Have a walk round the garden and go have a look in the greenhouses.
Not only plants the thrive in our climate are grown and examened here, also tropical plants are

Very well laid out and instructive. A bit off the beaten track to the south of the Albert park, but near the two principal museums.
Good free attarction, w.cs, greenhouses.
Cafeteria closed when we visited.

Having seen a lot of botanical gardens in the world [it's been sort of a ritual] this is certainly not the most impressive one. However it is located in a very nice garden, with a very friendly canteen and has enough plants to keep you busy and relaxed for a couple of hours. There are guided tours on regular hours and although I didn't make use of them, when seeing them taking their tours around they seemed extremely enthusiastic and lively. I have to admit I regretted not waiting for the starting hour.
A big plus to all, everything is free and is run by volunteers. Well worth the visit!
