- Thomas VOakland, California18,884 contributionsShopping and TransitThis central area is sort of the Times Square of Ghent with some inexpensive basic restaurants and tourist gift shops. But it is also adjacent to some of the most impressive historic buildings. All the trams seem to pass this plaza and you will surely come here. Not sure how long you will want to linger, as there are more charming areas just a minute away.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2023
- PaulKent, United Kingdom111 contributionsThe Christmas Market is incredibleWe visited in December to frequent the Christmas Markets located broadly across this central square area. It was huge and had a wide range of food stuffs/attractions and entertainment. The selection of beers and food was impressive and of good quality. Slightly expensive, as you can imagine, but a great visit and highly recommended. You can also enter the historic buildings and go up the tower for a great view of Gent.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 December 2023

Almost 1,000 years ago, grain imported via the Scheldt and Leie was traded here and the Korenmarkt grew into a center of activity during the Middle Ages. Later the stagecoaches also came here, so that at the beginning of the 20th century the impressive postal building was built on the foundations of what was originally to become the Royal Dutch Theater.
Now there are mainly shops and eateries and there are enormous crowds because of the trams and buses that stop here. There is currently also the Christmas market with lots of food and a Ferris wheel.

Had a walk round here as it I believe the main square in Ghent.
It certainly didn’t disappoint as the architecture is stunning. There are also numerous places to eat and drink if you want. Weather was a bit against us but it was certainly worth the effort. Definitely recommend and would love to visit again.

This area is pretty much your starting point if you want to visit Ghent's City Centre; on one side you'll find the main shopping street, on the other side you'll be heading for the more Medieval core of the city, with its "Gravensteen", "Vleeshuis" and "Patershol". Behind the old postal building you'll have a great view of the city and you can take (highly recommended) boat tours.
The buildings are exquisite and you can tell how much it means to the inhabitants to stay close to its past, whilst incorporating modern-day life as well. You'll also find some nice places to eat (though I'd recommend walking just a little bit ahead for cheaper and often better places).
Just take tram 1 from anyplace towards "Korenmarkt", and you are ready to explore the city!

The iconic towers of the buildings along the main street of the Korenmarkt are a spectacle and the vast choice available in the local businesses means that there will be something for everyone to enjoy here.

This is the main square in Ghent which is surrounded by some historical buildings, cafes and restaurants. During the X'mas season, this is also where the X'mas Market is. Great place to visit.
