This central area is sort of the Times Square of Ghent with some inexpensive basic restaurants and tourist gift shops. But it is also adjacent to some of the most impressive historic buildings. All the trams seem to pass this plaza and you will surely come here. Not sure how long you will want to linger, as there are more charming areas just a minute away.

We visited in December to frequent the Christmas Markets located broadly across this central square area. It was huge and had a wide range of food stuffs/attractions and entertainment. The selection of beers and food was impressive and of good quality. Slightly expensive, as you can imagine, but a great visit and highly recommended. You can also enter the historic buildings and go up the tower for a great view of Gent.

One of the most picturesque parts of town and in the very center. Lots of historic buildings are here, so you will want to linger. Most of the tram lines pass through here, and a lot of the area is pedestrian. Lots of restaurants, many of them catering to the tourist crowd.
