on our way to Dinant city center, we passed through this rock. my Belgian friend told the story which associated to this famous rock, just 2,5 km from the city center of Dinant. the rock carries a legend, where a French Knight Aymon together with his 4 children fought against Emperor Charlemagne. the four 4 children rode a very strong horse, and while running away from a capture, the horse jumped above the rock and resulting to the split of this rock which known as Rocher Bayard. Through decades, the story got revisions in France, Belgium and even in the Netherlands.
not satisfied with this legendary story, I then searched the truth behind the split rock. it actually split by the French troops under the command of Louis XIV after they invaded Dinant, making easier accessible road along the river.
the location of this Rocher Bayard is also a very good spot to view the highway bridge of Route Charlemagne. interestingly, in Dendermonde (150 km from Dinant) there is a procession which associated with the Bayard Steed which only happens once in 10 years.

Saw a picture of this pass with a bus driving through. Some remarks were that it is photoshop. So I had to check it out. Nice attraction)

While staying at the Ibis Hotel, we took a gentle stroll along the waterfront to see this famous landmark.
It is well worth seeing, but take note of photos of the rock to understand the best viewing points, because approaching from Dinant on foot and stopping some way short, doesn’t do it justice. You either have to view it from the other side, or from the water.

This whole thing is super simple - a very high rock and a road for cars in the middle. Gives claustrophobic feeling when you drive with a car through the spikes of that rock.

The best part is driving through the rock to get a dramatic entrance into Dinant. It is one of the symbols of Dinant.

Really cool spot in Dinant. I was surprised the bus could pass through that space! I cycled through it and then looked behind my shoulder: there was a bus! I guess the driver was not a beginner.

The famous landmark was the first thing we saw when walking from Anseremme to Dinant. It’s a splendid split rock formation about 40 metres high. It’s associated with the ancient Ardennes legend which said that the split was made by the horse Bayard carrying the four Aymon sons who were fleeing the Emperor Charles. As the horse climbed the rocky ridge its hooves split the rock in two. In fact Louis X1V'’s soldiers separated the rock to build an easy road next to the Meuse. Great Legend. A must see.

The first thing that I saw when entering Dinant was the narrow rock which we have to drive through. I saw on this page the story behind it. Quite interesting! Scroll a bit down for it.

Nice rock - worth a walk along the river to see it. Especially in sunshine as there are pretty churches around. I enjoyed it!

It's a rock...c'est tout. Is you arrive or leave dinant through it, great, but it is certainly not worth going or of your way to experience... Looks more impressive from outside than driving through
