At our time of visit Place Saint-Lambert is being restored to it past glory. So a construction site. Like a lot of places in Liège at the moment. I really do hope the ugly parking is just a temporary solution. Next to it at Place du Marché you'll find a dozen of nice bistros and bars with great outdoor seating.

Place Saint-Lambert is a large public square dominated by Le Palais des Princes-Évêque. There’s not much on the square and might as well be a large concrete slab. Although mostof the main sites of the city are around the square and there are events that liven up the place on special occasions, there wasn’t anything on the day I visited.
Most like you’ll pass this square at some point in Liege to gawk, eat and shop.

Nice one hour train ride into Liege's beautiful train station, and then a quick ride on Bus 1 brings you to Place St. Lambert, the location of the Christmas Market. It was also the scene of a terrible tragedy on 12/13/11 and we were there for the remembrance.
The Cristmas Market is quite large, over 200 chalets per the website. There certainly is a plentiful variety of food and drink to be had, but the goods for sale, over all, don't seem to be anything special. Having done a few of the Christmas Markets in Belgium over the last couple of weeks, I would rank Brugge #1 for quaintness and atmosphere and Brussels #1 for overall size, variety, and quality.

We visited Liège Christmas Market yesterday. We had really been looking forward to it as last weekend we had been to a fabulous market in Aachen, Germany. Unfortunately the market in Liège was a ‘let down’, it didn’t feel Christmassy at all. In fact the majority of the stalls were food and drink/bars, very little on offer for Christmas gifts/ornaments. The only thing we bought was a waffle!

Wide and beautiful square with a mix between modern and ancient buildings that surround it. The scene is full of concrete, cement, but it is a square of reasonable beauty anyway.

We went to Liege to visit 'the biggest and best...' christmas market. We were disappointed. Maybe if we werent used to the Frankfurt Market in Birmingham City Centre each year, we might have appreciated it more.
They had made a real effort to dress the square with christmas trees and lights, but one side of the square (very heavily trafficked) consisted of 2 rows of wooden chalet stalls selling things we were very familiar with. The other side was better and felt like the Christmas Village it was advertised as, complete with themed slide for children and a ferris wheel, but this section was dominated by food and drink outlets.
I wish I could be more positive, but.....

The square is surrounded by the Palais de Justice and the shoppingcenter and is used for many events. Underground you have a large parking.
All sorts of people hang out on the square on sunny days: teenagers, people waiting for the bus, children playing,...
In december part of the christmas market is placed here.
It took almost 25 years to get it in its current state.
Watch out when you cross: Busses and taxis ride between the square and the pavement of the mall.

The famous Place Sain-Lambert used to be the heart of the city of Liege.
But the old heart wasn't good anymore and wasn't modern enough.
So they started demolishing old historic buildings and because of a lack of money, they created irreparable damage to the city and an incurable heart.
If you're in Liege, you cannot miss this place.
Now accommodating a bus station, a highway and uninspiring areas in between.
What a failure, what a pity.

Generally regarded as the centre of Liege this square does the city no favours. It is immediately in front of the Palace of the Prince-Bishops so clearly has been of significant importance in the past, a feeling confirmed by the Archeoforum dig underneath (once I had found the well-hidden entrance!).
Such a shame, then, that seemingly random development of the square itself, its infrastructure and the buildings around it has produced a haphazard appearance on 3 of the 4 sides. A tunnel disgorges buses from the South of the city directly on to the square which is otherwise pedestrianised. The palace on one side faces a series of retail outlets developed over the years in a variety of styles, from C19 stone to modern glass and concrete. Shoppers, tourists and children mix with buses and beggars and dance around the traffic at the edges.
Such a shame really as a little foresight in the last century could have produced one of Europe's more impressive public plazas.
