The first time we saw Liège Guillemins railway station, which was designed by Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, we were totally wowed and gave it a five-bullet rating on Tripadvisor (14 June 2016). Our last experience, on 16 September 2023, was much less positive. The all-white building was dressed in colourful stripes by French artist Daniel Buren and looked like a Disneyland attraction. We don’t care about Buren’s work. A few years ago, it spoiled our visit to the amazing Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. When the station was built, questions were raised about the maintenance of the huge glass roof. In the meantime, so it seems, dirt has been left to pile up. What was even worse was a poster announcing “La gare se transforme en Night Club”. So we had to wait for half an hour in a station that had been converted into a nightclub. Even at the far end of the tracks, the sound was deafening and we were happy when our train arrived.

The stations look when I come to town with train look very nice.

I havent seen a building like this before. The size from outside when I left train and walked out was that its so big.

Designed by the renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the Liège-Guillemins railway station is a testament to contemporary architecture’s boundless creativity. Opened in 2009, the station’s design showcases Calatrava’s signature style, characterized by fluid lines, dynamic structures, and a harmonious blend of form and function.

I will look for some photo I had problem with getting the total building inside even from distance.

A stunningly beautiful station, the way the roof sheds colour throughout the station is stunning. The train station, the entrance point to a town shouldn't be it's best point but it is. A beautiful station, but the town is a messy construction site because of the tram, A lifeless soulless town.

It’s an interesting design and venue, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it. It’s brightly colored and probably quite pretty in the spring and summer, with outdoor space and fountains, but it’s NOT on the “Must Do” list unless you have a train station fascination.

If you have been to the city of arts and science in Valencia then you will recognise the design of this station as it was designed by the same guy Calatrava. Fluid and colour combine to make an impressive building and if you have to wait for a train then you may as well do it in a lovely space

The main station in Liege is a very grand building with sweeping lines which give it a very light and airy feel.

The station is served by trains from the local area as well as long distance trains within Belgium. It is also served by international Thalys trains from Koeln to Paris.

Will definitely return to admire more.

Stunning roof design over the main train station with large concourse at the front as well. Also shops and restaurants available both inside and opposite the station.

Although the city is not nice at all, it has a big and good train station. It is modern and well designed. I give 5 starts to it

The main reason why you should visit this railway station is because of its architecture. It was build by Calatrava. The same architect that build the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia.
There is a parking lot at the station, but rather expensive.
An other reason is the temporary exposition 'Napoleon – beyond the myth'. It end on January 9th 2022. This immersive cultural adventure, covering nearly 3000 m², traces the many facets of Napoleon Bonaparte. The entry fee includes an audioguide.
