    Must see park with waterfalls.
LaPaz was one of the high points of our family vacation to CR - we started the day at Poas volcano in the morning then drove to the other side of the mountain to visit La Paz. We ate a late lunch at the buffet that satisfied our family of picky eaters (teenagers). We also enjoyed seeing the animals (they are rescues and for various reasons unable to be released back into the wild) but the best part is hiking the path along the waterfalls. There are some steep points but there are plenty of opportunities to opt out for a less rugged/less physically demanding walk if needed.

    Excellent service
An amazing experience! Slightly on the expensive side but definately worth it. Special compliments to John whose knowledge and passion for hummingbirds enabled me to get some very nice pics. Excellent service from all staff in general.

    Lovely place!
This place was lovely. There was a lot to see and the restaurant buffet was really good. I wish our travel agent had told us about all the stairs. My knees were toast for the rest of our visit. Great place to see though if you can handle the stairs and climbing up and down steep terrain. The hummingbirds, and butterfly garden were really spectacular. They also had some caged monkeys and some great exhibits of insects and frogs. Great for families.

    So relaxing and beautiful!
This is such a beautiful place that is well maintained and very friendly staff. We will definitely bring family and friends back here. A special thanks to the gentlemen that let us get close to the Toucan named Tequila, he took our picture with him. Sorry I did not get his name. The trek down is not easy but well worth it. I have no complaints on the property, they are doing things right. Can’t wait to come back.

Great little place to get a glimpse. Grounds are really nice and waterfalls beautiful.
While this is a refuge for the animals and not in the wild, it really is very nice to see. I enjoyed the butterfly, hummingbirds and Toucans. Aside from all of this, the short walk to the Waterfalls was equally beautiful. For those who want a good cross section of Costa Rica in a a few hours, paved walkways and to see some of the local wildlife, this is a great place to be. It will not disappoint. If you combine this with some hiking at Poas (if the weather permits), it makes for a great trip. There are quite a bit of steps, but it is all downhill... they have a shuttle to bring you back up, so it is pretty darn easy for the location. The drive to the Gardens is a lot of up/down and windy, so for those who don't like mountainous driving, this is not for you!!

    A wonderful day trip!
A great way to spend the day. It is a beautiful drive from San Jose to the gardens. The whole trail in the gardens is quite a walk, but well worth it! Near the entrance are walk-through enclosures with birds, butterflies, snakes, and toads. They have a whole section with many different felines for a close up look. All the animals are rescues, so you feel good supporting them. Then, take the hike down the valley past several waterfalls, one of which you can stand right next to and touch!

Laz Paz Falls is a Great Day Trip from San Jose
This is an easy day trip from San Jose and well worth the trip. The park is huge and very well done. The facilities are superbly laid out and well appointed. The animal sanctuary was great and the animals appear well cared for. The toucan exhibit was a lot of fun and you can get up close and personal with them. It, along with the hummingbirds, was our favorite part. The butterfly exhibit was packed with the blue morphos and is a photographer’s dream. The falls themselves are beautiful and the path is not too strenuous. They use a bus to shuttle you back to reception which is a fabulous perk. The information says allow two hours but we were there three hours and could have stayed longer. Don’t cut yourself short on time. But do go and see it!

    Amazing experience
La Paz is beautiful, clean, and well worth the money for the experience. Waterfalls and animal exhibits are awesome. Customer service is excellent- one of our kids couldn’t make it and they immediately refunded the ticket. This is a must ‘do’ in Costa Rica.

    Almost perfect
Visited with my then Fiancé and mother in late December 2023. Had seen the reviews about the steps and the walk back up the hill. Amazes me that anyone thought that 5 successive waterfalls along the same river could be on flat ground. But there we are. It's also incredible that some reviewers managed to miss the bus station and giant shuttle bus that takes you all the way back to reception at the end of the falls. There really isn't that many stairs to climb. But there are a lot downhill. Obviously. The surroundings are incredible. The place is worth going to even without the animals. All animals look well fed and healthy. The toucan enclosure was a highlight. To see them so close up was amazing. The big cat enclosures could be bigger. And considering the size of the grounds, there's more than enough space to expand them. I would have given 5 stars had I not seen the bulls, strapped to a cart, standing like statues, being forced to pose for pictures by a trainer. When their heads inevitably droop the trainer grabs their horns and shoves their heads up for the next picture. Completely unnecessary. Not taking a picture with them takes nothing away from the day out. Other than that, what a wonderful place. Would definitely recommend on your visit to Costa Rica or as a local.

    AH-MA-ZING!
Amazing place, relaxed walk, pave walkways with railings. I have had many leg surgeries so was glad I could walk it. It was a challenge for me, especially all the descending steps to the waterfalls. I took my time, didn't try to rush. My legs were noodles when finished. Appreciated the shuttle to drive up back to the top! Can opt for not going down to the waterfalls and get to see everything else. I am 65

This place was a great stop off on our way from San Jose to La Fortuna. Really high levels of animal welfare and all the animals were either rescued/bred in captivity. The buffet lunch was delicious. Our highlight was the waterfall trail, the waterfalls were incredible and the trail through the park just beautiful. There is a free shuttle which takes you back to the reception/gift shop from the end of the waterfall trail.

I was deeply disappointed to find animals, reptiles, and birds kept in cages during my visit. The confined conditions for the snakes and cats were particularly heartbreaking—they desperately need more space. The bulls and cows were just sitting there, seemingly forced to stay under their name signs and wear headdresses for visitors. I also see a lonely calf in a cage by himself without its mother. I couldn't bear to stay any longer, as the outdated and disrespectful treatment of the animals was appalling. I'm shocked that such conditions are still legal.

The trip from San Jose was long, and the visit was recommended by a reputable source, Lonely Planet Costa Rica. However, I was dismayed to find the entrance fee of $120 for two people contributing to the animals' suffering. Please, do not support this place. Instead, consider visiting a wildlife rescue center or a national park where animals are treated with the respect they deserve. Lonely Planet, you can do better!

A MUST, right after visiting Poás Volcano. A perfect mix of ecology, tropical rainforest natural gardens and wildlife. This is a sanctuary refuge where you will see most of CR exotic animals upclose and in a protected environment. This plus several waterfalls and an amazing trail of mountainside and cliffside platforms along the way.

We took a taxi from our hotel in Alajuela to visit the Waterfall Gardens and had booked and paid for our tickets online. The drive to the Gardens took about an hour and was stunningly beautiful. There was a short queue on arrival which was processed quickly. Right at the entrance is an attractive souvenir shop and a restaurant with a lovely terrasse and some stunning views.
Then you walk downhill along a short path where all the attractions await. There's an aviary with many birds, a house each for snakes, monkeys, jungle cats and frogs as well as a large area for butterflies and a hummingbird garden. Before you go on a walk past the waterfalls you can see the casita, a traditional house and if you're lucky the two cows pulling a decorated cart.
We were there on a public holiday and it was reasonably busy with individual tourists as well as groups. Nevertheless, the gardens never really felt too crowded and as there are a number of restaurants, the one on the top which we chose was not too busy either. There are walks past a trout lake but we didn't take them. All in all, you could spend a whole day at the Gardens, but to see the main attractions you probably need at least three hours.
There is an exclusive hotel next door and guests get access to the gardens after hours for some private viewings. A lovely thought for a future visit perhaps!

The grounds are beautiful; the animals are amazing… the absolute very best butterfly observatory; the waterfalls are spectacular; the people are welcoming and friendly. Can’t say enough good things about La Paz.

Absolutely amazing day out. The place is so well kept and clean. While it’s not the nicest seeing animals in cages I understand the reasoning behind this place. The waterfalls are spectacular. The staff were so friendly. Especially the man working in the shop. Had a wonderful day with the family. Would highly recommend to everyone.

I think this attraction is completely underrated. Firstly, the main trail is not hard at all. I'm baffled by people complaining that it's not accessible, because it seems like they did no research at all. 1. It's Costa Rica. 2. There are clearly lots of stairs. I'm not sure what people were expecting.

That said, the main trail is mostly downward; there are a few spots where you can go down to viewing platforms and climb back up, but you can choose not to do these. Also, there was only one platform that was a little hard to climb back up, and it's the last one.

There's also a shuttle that leaves from the gift shop that is at the end of the trail (there is another gift shop at the entrance), and it leaves every 15 minutes. There are signs indicating this. It's not clear to me why some people thought they had to walk all the way back?

The other trails are less tourist and definitely tougher, but there isn't much to see there, and you can easily skip these.

The zoo part was great, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the aviary. The main attraction for me was the waterfalls.

There's water and restrooms at the entrance and zoo. There are also plenty of food options, though we didn't eat here. Parking is also including, though it's good to tip the attendants. To be honest, we only went here because it was on the way to Poas, but I'm so glad we did; this was way more fun.

In my opinion
It’s Pricey.
Cages for the big cats are small and have little or no mental stimulation, so much so that one cat was ‘Pacing’. Yes these are rescued animals, but they deserve better.

Great activity with lots of animals, birds, insects, and cool waterfalls. The trails around the park were very good. Didn't try the restaurants, but the old farmhouse snacks of cheese and coffee were very good.
