Who said Cistercian nuns didn't know how to make money? Despite the Rule of Benedict, these medieval nuns really knew how to live a self-sufficient and wealthy lifestyle. This is a very interesting and historical building. Currently there's an information centre plus it also hosts...More

The museum gives an overview of the 600 years of history explained (audio guide) by the abbesses (a very nice gimmick) - took us about 1,5 hours ... we also visited the herbs garden (very well laid out), but, as it was april, unfortunately still...More

The building itself is not spectacular but interesting enough to warrant the entrance fee. Not many original objects, but pictures and models. The garden is much more interesting. Well kept and laid out. Worth a visit.

Over the last two decades, the abbey has been beautifully restored and given a new purpose. The expansive and educational herbal garden, by itself, is more than worth a visit. The surrounding area is worth exploring on bicycle as well.

Nicely restored building with a small museum and a garden area which is slowly maturing. Easy to reach with ample parking space.

The Herkenrode abbey is an old and quite impressive site. It is worth a visit, but I would recommend skipping the museum. Entry is 5 euros, and for that you get an elaborate explanation of the history of the abbey, starting with the counts of...More

My husband and I visited this abbey recently and was not disappointed. We took the guided tour and it was very interesting to find out what has happened right there over all those years. Well worth a visit and it is also nice to take...More
