One of my favourite area's of Brussels is the wonderful Quartier Marolles, this is the working class district of the city ,obviously the famous flea market can't be ignored ,it's a popular tourist attraction basically selling landfill but fun to visit but this district is historic dating back to the Middle Ages, walking around this district is a joy ,I love the architecture both modern and old ,so many architectural styles to marvel at ,love it ,one of the big attractions for me and my twin brother Stephen are the amazing pubs, bars, cafe's and restaurants that are the real deal, not aimed at the tourists but the locals so the quality is better and the prices are local prices ,this is one of the only places in Brussels were you will hear the real " Brusseleer " dialect spoke ,it's just a great district of the city to visit if you're planning on visiting Brussels.

I visited the Marolles Flea Market in the Place Jeu de Balle at the end of August 2019. The market is easily accessible in a square midway between the Brussels Midi Station and the Palais de Justice (do use Google maps to orient yourself as there are several roads leading up to it.) It was a Friday morning and the place was fairly busy with vendors spread all over the square. In many respects this is an average flea market with just a few quirks thrown in: piles of clothes laid on the pavement, a bunch of broken up dolls all stacked together, a few mannequins creatively displayed. It is no different from many other flea markets you will find in Europe, from London to Palermo. In one respect, however, it was very different: the dozens of photo albums and hundreds of personal photos laid out on the pavement for sale.
It was very unnerving to see all these images from individual lives packed in cardboard boxes, or in some cases just strewn on cobblestones, being sold to strangers. What became of these people's lives? It was very obvious that many of the items being sold, including these photos, came from house clearances following someone's death. It made you think how alone these people must have been when they passed away not to have anyone in their lives to collect their photos before their belongings were given away. What made it even more heartbreaking was that some of the photo albums on sale were lovingly hand-decorated and annotated with personal memories: now they were being skimmed and passed over quickly by strangers looking for something valuable to buy for a bargain. I felt like buying all these photos to rescue them from the trashbin where a lot of them were likely destined to end up.
I understand that sights like these are common to flea markets all over the world, but the sheer numbers of the albums and photos for sale made Marolles a very sad, memorable experience for me. If you ever visit this market, do me a favor: buy just a few photos to honor the lives of the people whose memories are lost there. But for the grace of God, that could happen to any of us.

I read the reviews and although the flea market was a bit grungy it had a very unique collection of oddball pieces up for sale. Some of the vendors were a bit too pushy but I am able to deal with that. With a bit of bargaining, I would say the prices were quite fair. I picked up a brass Hunter's Horn key holder which after some polishing is proudly on the wall by my front door at home. It only cost me 5 euro which I consider to be a bargain. Going back for sometime soon to see what else I can turn up.

This is flea market is great place for buying nontrivial souvenir or something vintage. Here is possible to buy everything from comics, books to vintage furniture and carpets. Everybody, absolutely everybody can find something for self.
If you want to be sure that market won't be empty, you should visit it in weekends from

To get to the Flea Market, get off at the metro stop Louise. Walk past the courthouse with the magnificent dome and past the Infantry Memorial with the gold crown on top. From here, you get a great view of Brussels, including the Atomium. Walk a little further and you will see a glass elevator that takes you to the street below. Once down, walk down the incline and turn left. From here, you may need to ask for directions, as you walk a few blocks and then turn right. The flea market only takes up the equivalent of a small parking lot. Sellers have their wares laid out on tarps on the ground – not stalls. You can find china, vases, jewelry, clothes, etc. Be sure to bargain. All in all, I would say the view to get to the flea market was worth more than the flea market, but I did pick up a beautiful flower porcelain egg that will be a nice souvenir.

This is an exciting area of Brussels were you will find an eclectic mix of pubs, bars and restaurants and some really interesting architecture,as we were staying in the Bedford Hotel & Congress Centre this area was not to far away.
They have a daily flea market in Jeu De Belle that is extremely popular but I don't know why as the merchandise on offer in the market looks like landfill, that said the pubs and restaurants around the square are awesome and the streets around the Quartier Marolles are well worth visiting.
A great district of Brussels and well worth checking out.

I am probably not 'a flea market connoisseur' type person, but still went to visit what was all the fuss about and mainly was disappointed. The flea market is what it is - a flea market with most of the vendors showcasing their sell either on the ground or very few stands. After wandering there for an hour-hour and a half I didn't see a lot worth buying and those things that I'd buy were priced anything but cheap, that is with some price reduction for being used but not far away from a such item being sold as new in the shops anywhere.
What I did not like and was disgusted about was the dirt at the place. There was urinal surrounded with panes and it was overflowing with (you guess) - urine all over the place right at the square. Also some clearly not so sober persons were doing their needs out in the public, brrr. Certainly I am not going to visit this nor recommend it.

The area is very nice. Just as we made it to the market, we decided to have a drink first. I didn't think we were in the quirky pub that long, but when we came out, the market had packed up! It was only 2:30. But it was a Sunday, and it was car-free day, so there was festivities going on and bands marching up and down the streets, perhaps it closed early. But we were still in a nice area with galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. And we went to the market anyway! The sellers leave random things behind. Some things are broken, some were accidentally left, some were just random bits and bobs they didn't bother collecting. There were a few people picking at the leftovers so I didn't feel like such a strange person haha. I got some neat things for free.
