Description:

From the middle ages, a castle overlooked Brussels from Coudenberg hill....

From the middle ages, a castle overlooked Brussels from Coudenberg hill. From the 12th century, the successive monarchs and their representatives transformed a small fortified castle into a sumptuous residential palace, one of the most beautiful palace of Europe and one of Charles V's main residences. This prestigious building is severely damaged by fire in 1731. Some forty years later, the ruins of the palace are pulled down and the ground flattened out for the construction of the new royal district. The remains of this palace make up the Coudenberg archaeological site.

This is a must-do... its an absolutely fascinating insight into old Brussels history - you venture underground to see the old streets and buildings of the old Royal Palace. Its really atmospheric and informative. Well worth a visit.

We spent about 2 hours here, touring the site, and walking through the museum afterwards. Its pretty interesting, and worth the time and fairly low admission cost. It's pretty cool there,so I suspect it would be great in the summer or if its raining. My teenage son enjoyed it.

There was not enough information to make the walk through the underground ruins more than slightly interesting. I did not appreciate the broken pottery found in the sewers. Walking the underground ruins did not offer much value because they do not have good descriptive posters at the sites, it is not a museum where you will be captivated by information... More

Do not pretend anything special but this visit is very informative and extraordinary. You need the audio guide to fully understand but with the existing interpretation you will understand enough. Do not miss

You have a choice of two tours from this site - one is an exhibit on the history of Brussels, the other is the remains of the foundation of the former palace - Coudenberg. We chose to tour the later. It is basically what remins of what would have been the cellars of the palace. Not much to see. The... More

This is the former palace. It is right next door to the current palace and right across from the park. The road in front is very wide and seemed dangerous to cross. This is well maintained and very interesting as the architecture is older.

While the site is well maintained and fairly extensive, I found the information lacking. Many rooms or areas didn't have any panels whatsoever, and without the audioguide it is extremely difficult to gain a sense of what used to occur in these spaces other than broadly going "ah, this was the Cathedral." More could be done to really engage visitors... More

My husband and I travelled to Brussels during the Christmas holidays and we really enjoyed our visit to Coudenberg. I didn't know a thing about the place and was really surprised. We spent about 1.5 hours there and used the audio guide which was great! They actually have the first taxidermic horse in there...gross but cool lol. The place may... More

The attraction itself was quite interesting, but we had an issue with how it was managed. We arrived about 3.30pm, it closes at 5pm. We made our way through the rooms/ corridors reading about what we were seeing. This was quite interesting. At approx 4.40pm we headed towards the final section of the route. You have to go outside and... More
