A lot of people tend to go to Antwerp, Ghent and/or Bruges. Do not forget Mechelen. History. Dates back to 16th century. Important city. Market square is very beautiful. Cosy, nice restaurants, a walk along the river Dijle. All this makes Mechelen very agreeable.

Traditional Belgian square, surrounding by bars and restaurants and underground parking. A must to sit and have a beer while visiting Mechelen

During our stay, the market square was lit with Valentine Days lights which looked very romantic. The building facades look very nice.

The Grotemarkt is beautiful, with the stadhuis and historic stadhuises (all three of them) viewable from there, along with Sint-Romboutskathedraal, and historic residences. However, it is all best discovered on a Saturday morning, when the weekly market is there. You can get great deals on just about anything, from Mussels to meat to bread to cheese to fresh squeezed orange juice to shoes, clothing and cleaning supplies. If you come at 11:30, you will be entertained by world-famous Stads Beiaardier Eddy Marien, playing the carillon (Beiaard) of 49 bells in Sint-Romboutstoren, for an hour.

It is a big city center. When we visited there was a farmers market and was fun to stroll around.
In the night the lighting is awesome. Mostly all the historical place one can see from the city center. One side you can see the tower of St Rumbold's Cathedral.
There are quite few restaurants at the city center.

Nice Belgian style square with little bars all around. Nice for a walk or to sit and have a chat on the tables outside. On sundays the huis van mechelar (unsure about spelling) is closed

One of the prettiest Grote Markts I have seen. The cathedral shadows it from one side and the beautiful gothic building on the other. Loved the little offshoots of little mazey streets all around.

Try to imagine how Mechelen must have been centuries ago. All these beautiful buildings help you in this.

Very atmospheric square in the heart of Mechelen, surrounded by a lot of bars and restaurants. View on the cathedral from here is amazing.
