Went in July when everything was in full bloom, wandered around for 3 hours and there was still bits we had'nt seen. Beautiful gardens well laid out, plenty of places to sit and enjoy the view, would go back

Beautiful exotic greenhouses, zen garden and a terrific café, all make this a place to visit in Leiden. Excellent value for money, an afternoon wandering in and out of the bushes and flowers, sit by the canal and watch the world go by, or in...More

We visited the Hortus Botanical Garden today. It is part of Leiden University and occupies wonderful land along a pretty canal, and set among attractive university buildings. September is not the best time for a botanical garden, but we still enjoyed the grounds. Especially notable...More

Lovely gardens right in the heart of Leiden, a must for any green fingered individuals. The Victoria Amazonia Lily Pads were a personal favourite.🌺🌷

Had a lovely visit here on a nice sunny day in Leiden. The gardens are beautifully laid out and quite peaceful. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Being used to the excellently maintained Kruidtuin in Leuven, Belgium, this certainly was a disappointment. Although high summer, hardly any plants blooming. Maybe the bad weather of the last 2 months had something to do with it, but still a bummer. Overall the gardens did...More

This is a garden to walk through even if you are not a garden fanatic. The views of the university and the canals are excellent, and you see a lot of the history of spice and tulip importing from the 15th century. There seems to...More

The location of these gardens and the plants themselves make this a very pleasant experience. Leiden is such a nice place to visit and the gardens take the stress of, say, touristy Amsterdam away. Perhaps the only criticism is the cost of visiting. Don't expect...More

Leiden is a peaceful city anyway but the Hortus is a peaceful haven anyway! Lovely grounds with plants and flowers from around the world. Sub- Tropical and Tropical houses (great in the winter months especially!!), an Orangerie. Sit and relax by the canal side. Walk...More

Hortus Botanicus Leiden is a pleasant though not particularly well maintained garden. Lots of informative signs in both Dutch and English. Worth a visit as a historical site, but I wish it was better maintained.

You can walk around for 1 up to 2 hours, depending on the time you have. If cold weather you can spend 30 min. up to an hour in the orangeries, where you find tropical weather.
