Museum Volkenkunde is a museum about people housed in a historic building just five minutes' walk from Leiden's central station. Our visit to the museum was very enjoyable and informative. The ethic displays are very well executed. We very much appreciated the Buddha room. There was a special feather exhibit which was outstanding. Several mannequins were dressed in feather dresses and coats. The display was fascinating. A huge bird cage included many types of birds. Overall, it was an exceptional... More

This is the type of museum that is best visited a little bit at a time and return multiple times. If attempting to see it all at once, one can quickly become overwhelmed.

Separate rooms/displays for global regions like Africa, Asia, Mid-East. Displays were interesting and informative and often linked the Netherlands connection to them.

Volkenkunde ("Folk's Art") has a large collection of artefacts from different cultures, and a large exhibition space. The artefacts are arranged according to their land of origin. There is also a Buddha room. I enjoyed gazing at artefacts and reading the information available. I did get tired after an hour: possibly because of low lighting and my lack of knowledge... More

This is a gem of a museum if you are into cultural history. Just be sure to leave enough time in your itinerary for this visit as the museum is quite big and the exhibits time consuming if you really want to learn about the different cultures. Exhibits are interactive as well and kept in a pristine condition. One of... More

Being an English speaker, I didn't find the info super consumable. The exhibits seemed random in places, sometimes I couldn't fully figure out what the displaying was trying to convey. In the Oceana exhibit there was a bunch of ripped shirts and even though I went through the book beside it, I still couldn't figure out why they modified the... More

Great collections and explanations of a wide range of cultures. The current temporary exhibition (about the pilgrimage to Mecca) was also fantastic and provided with new information and insights that many people would otherwise never have. Recommended!

I visited here one Saturday afternoon, with no expectations regarding the exhibits. I found the museum fascinating, with the 350 Indonesian dolls an amazing piece of work. I particularly liked the temporary exhibitions in each area, highlighting one area of interest. The cafe is airy and has plenty of seating.

A fantastic collection from so many different cultures. I am fond of their outdoor displays as well as their lecture programmes. The staff is nice and the display is simple and interesting. We visited the temporary exhibition on Buddha, which was fascinating to how different cultures have a different message. If you are interested in cultures this is a must... More

Go soon as this museum is going to be having major renovation. They show art and objects from Leiden. There is a room about the siege of Leiden with an interactive map. There is also a floor showing the weaving industry and even has the room where home woven fabric was rated and inspected as this building was originally used... More
