About
The museum is the house of the banker and collector Simon van Gijn who lived there from 1864 until his death in 1922. Van Gijn left the house and most of his collections to the Old Dordrecht Society. His wish was for the collections to be made publicly accessible and for his home to be converted into a museum, maintaining the interior in its original state as much as possible.

A really interesting insight into Dutch history and was a really cool experience getting to visit! Plenty to see and a café downstairs as well!

Super beautiful and interesting to see how this house is so well preserved. It is even more beautiful than you can imagine beforehand. Also nice to download the free app that allows you to get information about the rooms. I personally enjoy visiting houses from this era, so it was extra nice that you can also have your picture taken in a real old dress. Also the toy loft of everything. Also nice that there was a scavenger hunt for the kids.

I love visiting these old and well-preserved houses. Have seen many of them, mostly in the UK, and I had no idea we have them of this quality in the Netherlands too. Dordrecht is overall quite a nice city and this house is a must see!

It's a house frozen in time, room after room of beautiful furniture. Well supported with the audio guide app, and the booklet. Easy to adhere to social distancing.

It was fascinating to see a grand house in the city. As a uk citizen, i am used to seeing grand country houses, but fewer Town houses. There was limited information in English, but Google translate coped well with the information boards.

The toy attic was fascinating. I could have spent longer but i was running out of energy by then.

The cafe was good, I think a slightly limited choice of savouries, but a good looking selection of cakes.

This is a small museum showing off the house and many of the items collected by Van Gijn, that gives you a good idea of his wealth. The number of ornate children's toys on show in the upstairs play room was impressive as well as the tapestries adorning the walls in the lower rooms. Worth a stop if you are in the area but should only take around an hour to see or a bit longer if you follow the informative guide book available at the main desk.

If you look as though you might, just possibly, be about to touch something, or if you shine your phone on something to see it better, prepare to be reprimanded! Not very pleasant... The lighting on some exhibits is very disappointing and a number of people had to move to the windows to read the booklet in their hand.

This museum is well designed within the restrictions of the building and its former owner. There is a lift to help people get up and down, as well as a handy little booklet in a range of languages for information.
