This is said to be the oldest Hofje in The Netherlands. Hours vary, but If you see one that is open, take a few minutes to step inside the gate and admire the gardens.

These traditional areas are worth a look if you can gain access - they are not all open to the public all the time. They are tranquil and pretty - an oasis in the heart of the town

This seems to be the oldest hofje in The Netherlands, initially built in 1395. It counted 20 houses, all of them still inhabited.

Went to this hofje during the Haarlem trip. It is a very typical Dutch concept and a nice one. I can imaging the people living there would have a nice little place for themselves in the evening to enjoy. Since there are occupied houses around this courtyard, one has to be attentive of not making a lot of noise or disturbance to the people.

One of the charming aspects of Haarlem is the existence of historic "hofjes". One of the oldest "hofjes" is the "Hofje van Bakenes". Is was established in the 17th century, but the complex was already in use in the 14th century; it was then an institution for women. The "Hofje van Bakenes" has a traditional pattern. Entrance through a forbidding door. (This "hofje" has an open door, no ringing necessary). You step into a beautiful garden, round which the historic houses are grouped. Sit down on a bench and take in the historic details. See the pictures I have added. The half doors and the restored pump for example. Include this "hofje" in your Haarlem tour. Entrance is free.

Haarlem has dozens of concealed retreats ('hofjes'), many of which can be visited during day time. Just open a door and a different world is at your feet - you can download a brochure from the Haarlem municipal website.

This Hofje is one of many in Haarlem.
I love Hofjes (interior courtyards), because they are often more or less hidden. Like a secret. Upon entering, all city noises are gone. It is quiet, and the uniform architecture adds to the peaceful experience.
When in Haarlem, I recommend to do a so-called Hofjes-walk, that will lead you along a variety of hofjes.
