The Cathedral Basilica of St. Bavo (New Bavo) was designed by J.Th. Cuypers and built in the period from 1895 to 1930. The Cathedral Basilica is based on the classic form of a three-aisled basilica with chapels along the aisles and chapels along the choir. Because construction took a lot of time and a period of lack of funds in the diocese building temporarily brought, Cuypers was given the opportunity to present his designs several adjustments during construction and perform. The building therefore has an eclectic style, mainly neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic elements alongside Moorish and Assyrian ornament shapes and influences of Art Nouveau and the architect H. P. Berlage. Recently artworks of Jan Dibbets, Gijs Frieling and Marc Mulders were added to the interior. Without doubt a very special building. Activities at this monument: KathedraalMuseum, Willibrord Organ plus periodically vault tours and climbing the towers.

How beautiful is this huge church in the middle of Haarlem. Historic. We also enjoyed an organ recital on a Tuesday evening, with a master from the University of Rochester, USA.

Gorgeous church, enjoyed the Sat. Market in shadow of church, then a beautiful service the next morning. Stunning old church!

Very impressive. Good free visitor guide available in English to make the most of exploring this magnificent h historic church. Encouraged that the church is still a place in which Jesus is honoured as the Church meet together on Sundays in the summer

We say this Cathedral via a canal cruise. It took 150 years to build I think. Just spending 27,000,000 Euro's to renovate one tower. A must to see.

Absolutely stunning cathedral - the detail in the workmanship and the newer addition of a fabulous stained glass window merge really seamlessly together

The church dominates the Grote Markt or main square of Haarlem. It is only used in Summer for services. It costs 2.50 Euros to visit. Large but nothing special!!

After so many stripped-bare church interiors, Saint Bavo was a wonderful surprise: not austere, cold, or bare, and graced with a glorious organ once played by Mozart.

The restauration of the Bavo cathedral will be fully finished in 2017, but already it's quite clear that Jos Cuyper's masterpiece now even looks better then when it was first opened at the beginning of last century. Even on the outside the colours have been...More

While having a lovely walk along the tow canal connecting Haarlem to Leiden, called ‘Trekvaart Haarlem-Leiden’, this huge cathedral just popped up in the Dutch landscape like a Fata Morgana. It’s a 19th century construction with a hodgepodge of styles: neo-Romanesque, neo-gothic, Art Nouveau, with...More

Very nice chapel, if you enjoy stain glass it is worth a visit, chapel is out of the way about a 10 minute walk, nice walk and we even found a market along the way.
