Description:

Anyone who opens the museum's heavy door on the bank of the River Spaarne...

Anyone who opens the museum's heavy door on the bank of the River Spaarne sees at a glance what it is that inspires such enthusiasm. The museum breathes the atmosphere of the 18th and 19th centuries - the Age of the Enlightenment - when people were busily gathering knowledge about the world. Teylers Museum is a world in itself, one that you will never forget. Teylers Museum is the best-preserved 18th-century public knowledge institution for the arts and sciences in the world. It has been open to the public since 1784, welcoming all those who are eager to look at paintings and drawings by the Old Masters, magnificent minerals, ingenious scientific instruments, precious books, and centuries-old fossils. The museum's interior alone, with the monumental Oval Room as pièce de resistance, is a truly remarkable attraction. It is the only authentic 18th-century museum interior in the world.

Though it has been a while since I visited, the Teyler's Museum is one of the few museums I have visited more than once and enjoyed both as a child and as an adult. A personal favourite is the section containing old scientific equipment and an amazing collection of natural history. On top of that, the building itself, on its... More

Excellent and impressive collection of 17th and 18th century scientific instruments in the oldest museum of The Netherlands. The (free!) audio tour is a must.

OK, up front, I am not a science person. I knew before going in that the Teylers was probably not going to be my cup of tea, but because I live with two science-obsessed family members, I agreed to go. PROS: - the building is fabulous. The detailing in the woodwork was terrific. - As the oldest museum in the... More

This is a hodgepodge of a museum but well worth the time. In the two halls with paintings take note of the seascapes. The Dutch do these extremely well - the contrast of Calm and Turbulent Seas in two paintings by Schotel is wonderful. This is a good start for viewing other seascapes in Amsterdam. The science rooms are dated... More

This museum is kept just as it was created - and although one might think it 'old fashioned' it was still fascinating. The art collection is well worth seeing. Not much for children to 'do'

What an amazing collection and there were many items for each category; fossils, engineering inventions, drawings and paintings. They were right in front of us. It was almost the closing time and the museum was not crowded. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to see them all but for what we were able to see they were fascinating. If... More
