Overview
More
Anyone who opens the museum's heavy door on the bank of the River Spaarne sees at a glance what it is that inspires such enthusiasm. The museum breathes the atmosphere of the 18th and 19th centuries - the Age of the Enlightenment - when people were busily gathering knowledge about the world. Teylers Museum, museum of wonder, is a world in itself, one that you will never forget. Teylers Museum is the best-preserved 18th-century public knowledge institution for the arts and sciences in the world. It has been open to the public since 1784, welcoming all those who are eager to look at paintings and drawings by the Old Masters, magnificent minerals, ingenious scientific instruments, precious books, and centuries-old fossils. The museum's interior alone, with the monumental Oval Room as pièce de resistance, is a truly remarkable attraction. It is the only authentic 18th-century museum interior in the world.

When you come into this museum, you think you’re back in the early 20th century: display case after display case of fossils, minerals, scientific devices, all with handwritten labels, just like in the good old days. It’s like the museum of a museum! The museum...More

This museum is very special as it preserves past ideas of collection forming as well as is reaching out to today's public, old and young. Scientific apparatus, archeaology, art, the historic show cases and the building itself happily vie for attention. Very good experience!

Lots of old-school Kunstkammer-style attractions. Old Leyden jars, antique currency and commemorative coins, skeletons, rocks and gems, you name it. Don't miss the (reproduction) sketches by Dutch Masters in the painting room. The museum has a lobby with lockers, a small shop, and a restaurant...More

I cannot agree with the reviews that complain about the lack of explanations. All museums have to cater to inform the general public these days with interactive exhibits and over-curated displays. Sometimes it's nice to step back in time and see cabinets overflowing with surprising...More
