To be honest, I do not have a great knowledge of the work of Frans Hals. After going to this museum, however, I have a much greater understanding and appreciation for this Haarlem native's work. He was a master of portraits, but specialized in the painting of groups of individuals, particularly members of different clubs and groups. I actually prefer... More

I will summarize this museum in one word: Amazing. If the Netherlands has Van Gogh and Amsterdam has Rembrandt, Haarlem has Frans Hals ! I confess I wasn’t expect much of it, but I was wrong. It is simply beautiful, very organized, very intimate, rich, charming, well-preserved, with rare pieces of arts, silverware, porcelain, centenarians clocks, sculptures and paintings. The... More

I took my 6 and 7 year old here and they really liked it. It was small, with a good variety of paintings and other interesting items. My daughter was especially taken with the doll house, and both kids loved the interactive computer display toward the end explaining all the silly sayings depicted in a painting. Lovely courtyard.

Very nice temporary combination of nicely arranged bouquets of tulips with a very strong collections of old Dutch masters. We also had the pleasure of meeting the lady who arranges the flowers. During weekdays some streetparking in the surrounding streets can be found against 4 Euros per hour. Admission 12,50, combined with Teylers museum 17,50.

Excellent portraits in a beautiful building. Look at the architecture as well as the art. The doll's house would be better for us English speakers with some descriptions on the audio guide but still it was fascinating.

Frans Hals painted many civil guard groups (similar to the nightwatch theme)... These gentlemen loved having their group portraits taken (painted) and put on display. The museum is easy to walk through and in a typical dutch building. The latest exhibition of "I Spy With My Little Eye..." was a nice touch to help us non-artists really look at the... More

Tucked away in a former almshouse where the artist lived out his last days, this is a much larger museum than we expected, so leave enough time to stroll around - at least a couple of hours. Lovely building that does justice to the paintings and other artworks. Very pleasant tea rooms and within a short walk of central Haarlem.... More
