The area
Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

PROS
* The most classic scenic image of Amsterdam
* Incredibly iconic views
* Endless and abundant
* They are everywhere, but every one of them is different
* Strolling is so much fun and it's endless
* Classic photo opportunities abundant of many bicycles attached to the railings of the bridges that cross the canal (I have many but I don't think that they are attached to this review but some can be viewed with my reviews of Bridge of 15 Bridges and of Bloememmarkt).

CONS
There are so many and so close that one can get lost and/or disoriented

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... because crossing the canal ring and exploring is what one does in Amsterdam.

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It's free

WOULD I VISIT THIS PLACE AGAIN?
That's the plan

This picturesque area by the canal is perfect for strolling esp at evening when the lights bring the area to life. It is great for simply strolling or to sit at one of the cafes and enjoy the scenery. There are lots of restaurants and bars in this area also, so you can enjoy which ever way you choose.

The canal area is nice in the summer to walk round. We came at the end of July so we had some nice weather with a touch of rain. Look for the decorated bikes that are over some of the main bridges. These are painted different colours and decorated with flowers.

Look out for cyclist whilst walking these come in all different directions and at some serious pace. A lot of bikes seemed to have been left for some time covered in rust etc this seemed to clutter some of the pathways.

It is lovely to wander along the canals which are lined with beautiful houses, restaurants and cafes and to watch the boats going by. You can't visit Amsterdam without strolling along some of the canals.

This is a beautiful area of the city. There's lots of little shops and outdoor eateries/cafes. You could easily spend all day wandering the rings. The charming old buildings are very picturesque. The architecture is very lovely. Some nearby attractions are the Anne Frank House and Westerkerk Church.

I can't count the number of photos I took in this area. Very walkable and very beautiful. There are a huge variety of shops and restaurants - something for everyone here. And if you get someone to give you some of the history of the location, even better!

A word of warning, it’s very easy to plan. A walking route was looking at a map that makes the centre of the city, look tiny.

So what at the fourth canal is longer on the map than the first canal, they basically circle around each other. Even though your mind tells you that the fourth canal is gonna be longer than the first canal. It doesn’t look like much on the map and so hey why not go for it. In reality, the centre of Amsterdam is bloody huge and that walk that you were going to do so easily and gracefully along the canal. Turns out to be two hours in the Sun trying desperately hard not to be run over by bicycles and motorbikes.

This leads me to my second warning which is bicycles. I totally understand that they are in the easy way to get around. Amsterdam is flat after all, they’ve been even given the Room Lane to cycling, although who cares because they use the pavement as well. They don’t care about pedestrians they don’t slow down they don’t stop they just whistle around by the thousand and not only do you need eyes in the front and back of your head, but all along the sides as well.

Lovely hols to go on any time of year. If winter check weather just in case. We went one time to find canal boats out of service as canals were all frozen!

Very interesting - more canals than Venice. You see all the narrow houses with gables and winches, for use in pulling goods etc to upper floors. Lots of houseboats
