- FernGlasgow, United Kingdom575 contributionsgreat museumas a microbiology student, this place was amazing!! i could have spent all day here. absolutely attend one of the daily talks if you can, it was fascinating. there is a ton of information and unusual microbes, plus rate opportunities to look down microscopes at microbes such as unusual algae - something i particularly enjoyed! even if you aren't particularly interested in micro you will still enjoy an hour or more visiting here. :)Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2024
- Lucas MBelgium169 contributionsInteractive and interesting museumGreat museum! Very interesting content displayed in an interactive and visually pleasing way. You could see live microbes under microscopes that you could operate yourself. A fun afternoon out for adults and kids alike!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 March 2024
- Hilary T14 contributionsVery interesting museum! We visited this on our first full day in Amsterdam. There are so many interesting exhibits to look at and the interactive exhibits really add to the experience (as well as being able to collect stamps as you go round!). We have recommended this to friends and family too!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2024
- Anna G60 contributionsA zoo for microbes!Great attraction, suitable for adults, teens and young kids with interactive exhibits and tons of microbes to learn more about. You can scan your body, analyse a kiss, and study life under a microscope. Everyone working there was super friendly and happy to help too. A fun and unique experience.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 July 2024

We included a trip to Micropia based on the great reviews as a family of 4 with 2 boys aged 12 & 9. However, I was left a little underwhelmed. The elevator entrance was promising and the interactive bits were good (the body scanner and the ants). But I was expecting to look at lots of everyday things under the microscope and be amazed, instead it was much more science-y and we all were a little bored after 45 mins. My younger son tried to collect all the stamps but the machine at the end told him he had only collected 22 out of 30, he was outraged!
Overall, I would say don’t bother unless you/ your kids are really into science.
Side note - the zoo is right next door and you can see some of the animals when you exit Micropia. There’s also a nice spot there to sit & eat lunch.

Our teens are very interested in science and microbes, so they requested a trip to Artis and Micropia, and luckily there is a combo entry ticket you can purchase! We really enjoyed Micropia. It is easily seen in a couple of hours, and the exhibits are interactive, including stamps that you can collect. The museum is modern and very well done, with the information given in a way that even non-science lovers can enjoy them.

I came in here with not so big expectations. I expected to see some picture of the microbes and some petri dishes. However, it has exceeded the expectations way too much! For a great price (10€ for a student) the museum was greatly interactive, with so many unique ways to find out many information about different life forms. The museum held so many attractions that I don't even know where to start and how to explain them all. However I highly recommend to visit if you're in Amsterdam. The visit may take up to three hours, if you're willing to read a lot of text and intake a bunch of informations. It's great for children as well as adults. People with advanced biology knowledge may find the information there primitive, though I still think that seeing this type of things on your own in such an interactive and interesting way is really worth it.

Even if you’re not a science geek, microbes and bacteria are a fascinating subject for a museum and this one delivers. Well designed, interactive displays and exhibits and not too crowded. We loved it. You’ll never look at your cell phone the same way again...lots of bacteria accumulate, apparently! Also, there’s a terrific little cafe down the street called Box Social - great spot for brunch or lunch.

As our daughter fond of science and based on reviews we included visit to Micropia in our “ musea tour day” . Daughter loved it: she viewed and read all documentation and explanations - we mainly enjoyed the numerous shapes and colours of the microscopic examples. Possibly for younger kids ( several around) those shapes & colours will enjoy - and maybe will result in them becoming interested in science too. Museum’s lab where they “brew” the exhibited microbes etc, can be viewed from the outside with explanation.

Came here with a good friend of mine. And I was bit sceptic about it cause it is about bacteria and fungi. But my skepticism went away almost instantly, cause I didn't expected it to be so interesting to see all kinds of different Bacteria and Fungi. Also to see how it survives and thrives in such different climates and habitats is amazing. So many colors and shapes, it's mesmerizing. And the nice thing about this museum is that it's interactive. Kids will enjoy that about it as well. Also kids at heart like me😅. The coolest thing for me was the ants who live in harmony with the fungi and the things u can do with Fungi like using it as a material . That was really dope to see. Its not the biggest museum i've been to and the price is a bit to steep in my opinion. But if u'r really interested u will still be here for quite a time; we'd been in the museum for 2 hours. For the size of it it's quite long . I knew that stuff like money and doorknobs were disgusting but to see so much bacteria on it 😅🤮. I'm pretty hygenic but after this museum trip i will wash my hands more times an hour now🤣. Don't be skeptic like me and try it out! It's something different than ur typical museum.

My family is full of science people, so this was our second visit to Micropia. It is amazing that there is a museum dedicated to microbes! There are many displays and microscopes to look through, as well as a daily presentation by the staff. Micropia has free lockers on the lower level, and it is on the grounds of the zoo. They do sell a combo ticket with zoo admission.

Micropia is a fabulous museum. It is very small, but there is so much to do and explore. My 10 year old son was obsessed with all of the exhibits, and he spent a solid hour and a half engrossed in exploring the space. The only complaint is that we heard they had tardigrade dolls, but on the day we visited, they had no dolls for sale, and they would not sell any of the many display dolls. We had to order one from their online shop and have it sent to a family member in Spain as we were only in Amsterdam for a short time, and they do not ship to our home country. The shipping cost alone for this tiny toy to send it to Spain is 22.50 euros. Hopefully more reasonable shipping options will be added, or they will make a larger gift shop in the future. Otherwise, it was an excellent museum for kids and adults alike.

Is it open during November?
Written 28 September 2020
It’s currently open and would therefore also in november. Current corona guidelines have not -yet- changed for musea. Anyway note you’ll have to book online ticket in advance as visitor flow controlled via their website which then for tickets directs to Artis’ website

How long does it take to see the museum?
Written 3 July 2019
1 hour if you just have a brisk walk-through. 2 hours for a more detailed tour and if you read and see all exhibit details. Add 20-30 minutes more if you are into collecting stamps during your visit.
Written 4 July 2019
Can one buy a separate ticket just for Micropia or is it a joint zoo and micropia ticket? Thanks
Written 30 September 2018
We got tickets for micropia only.
No need to buy both of them.
