This is the real deal local pub. Tourists are not welcomed with open arms, but not tossed out on their ear either. Just slip into the groove and you'll be fine. Of all the bruin cafes we have been to this is the most authentic. Because it is the real deal.

Great time visiting this pub. First heard about it from Anthony Bourdain and we always go to one of his recommendations when we travel. This is in the middle of the most touristy spot but hidden so well from the Tourists. We had fresh sausage, meatballs and worsts it was in heaven. No bar, just a Back room where they... More

This bar is great. Very well decorated, great beer, friendly staff too! Very obviously where some of the older local Dutch hang out. Really cozy!

It's weird to read all these positive reviews for this place. Me and my wife got there early and the bar was empty (seems it has just opened). We sat and the barman (typical tall Dutch guy) didn't do anything about our presence. I stood up, and searched for a menu. It was written in Dutch. I asked for a... More

Just around the corner from the Begijnhof and into a little street is De Engelse Reet (English buttocks). The name is etched in the window, just in case you walk by it, as we did. We were looking for gin or rather Jenever. This famous Dutch drink is taken neat and the 5 year old Loyaal, distilled in the Jordan... More

This ancient brown bar (also known as De Engelse Reet) is tucked away in a little alleyway off the main pedestrianised shopping street Kalverstraat. It's a new dimension for licences premises - a bar with no bar. Well-dressed gents in collars and ties serve drinks from a back room. The peeling wallpaper and wrinkled photos of old Amsterdam on the... More

The Cafe De Pilsener Club (or De Engelse Reet) is an original "brown cafe" in the Beginhof district, just off the Beginhof gardens. There is no bar as such on the premises, but drinks are served from a separate area to the rear. The place has a distinctive air about it and the walls have photographs of characters who have... We stumbled across this small place by accident as the sun was shining down the narrow lane. We sat outside and sampled a few different beers from the extensive offerings and were not disappointed by any of them. The bar man was very helpful in assisting with our choices, each very drinkable. The beer menu is detailed and tells how... More

Staying in Centrum

Neighbourhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
