If you are visiting attractions like Begijnhof and Amstedam Museum on a Sunday, you might want to check out the open art market held at Spuiplein, just to the south of Begignhof. From 10am to 6pm local artists setup stalls and display paintings, drawings, handmade jewellery and other artistic items for purchase. It seems stalls are manned by the artists... More

I much preferred this town square to the much more well-known Dam Square. Full of shops, bookstores, bars and restaurants and also a fun art show on Sundays, this is a great place to grab a glass of wine (or to eat in nearby Kantjil en de Tiger) and relax. Very historic and some great architecture.

A very VERY short street but what a lovely place to check out local artist IMO. It was a lovely sunny morning when i came across this place on my walk from my hotel NH City Center towards the Dam Square. The stall holders whom many are the artist themselves is happy to chat about thier wares.

This square is very nice also without the art market. The building all around are some of the oldest in Amsterdam, including a gothic church. The art market is very diversified, there is everything what you can immagine. My only questions - who buys this art and craft?

The square itself in a fun place, and the art market adds to it. Even without it its worth a visit, there a number of small gems around here to look at. the Gothic church across the canal, and the Bigijnhof, the cafes etc. The artist at this square displaying are an eclectic bunch, but the stuff is good. I... More

We were staying close to Spui so decided to walk to the square and have a look at the art and crafts. Vendors were still unpacking their wares despite the fact we'd had a leisurely, late breakfast. What was there was interesting but just not enough artists displaying pieces. As others have said, don't make this your main destination, it... More

Didn't plan to come to this place but when I saw there was something on the square, I decided to take a look. I was glad to stop at this open air art market. It's small square full of artwork such as : painting, hand-made jewelry, ceramics, hand painted scarf, postcards, small statues made from paper etc. It's recomended for... More

the weekend we went there, there were only a handful of vendors, but i must admit that most of them were selling amazing hand crafts, like paintings, pottery, and the like. we certainly purchased a few great items! well worth a stop by.

Staying in Centrum

Neighbourhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
