About
The Sloten Windmill is a functioning draining mill and at the same time the only windmill in Amsterdam which is open daily to the public. The Mill is situated in the outskirts of Amsterdam not far from Schiphol Airport. It controls the water level in the western part of Amsterdam. This area is situated more than 2 meters below sea level. The Sloten Windmill is a rebuilt mill, dating from 1847. The whole year long the Mill can be visited daily (except Jan. 1st, April 27th and December 25 and 26). The windmill is a non-profit organisation, run by volunteers. Knowledgeable guides will gladly explain the working of the mill during a guided tour. And if possible the miller will demonstrate how the top of the mill is turned, or how to stop the mill.

fascinating tour of a working windmill
Easily accessible by tram from central Amsterdam , a short walk from the tram stop. friendly helpful staff and a really interesting tour of a working windmill. The guide was very knowledgeable and we go to meet the Miller who was fixing the sails. Suitable for adults and children.

    Wonderful tour, nice souvenirs
Wonderful time here. We were in a rush so they hurried the normal hour long tour for us. They were very kind and spoke English for us. Learned a lot about the windmills and actually get to go inside to explore.

    Lovely, quintessentially Dutch experience!
It’s very accessible via the tram from Amsterdam. Ellen gave a super informative tour about the history of windmills and the irrigation capabilities that they enabled. The mill crew had the day off for the Easter holiday, but they had a few videos to help us get the idea of what the mill looks like in action. Would highly recommend!

When in Amsterdam, a must see away from the city
Really worth the visit. A very informative tour of the windmill and its history. Answered the many questions my 9 year old had about Amsterdam and why we were below see level but not wet! Definitely take the time to come out and explore Dutch engineering as it simplest and best.

We stopped in by chance late in the afternoon and our guide was so gracious and he was delighted to share. The tour was interesting and it was fun to be able to climb inside the windmill and learn how it works. I highly recommend a visit.

    Fascinating and engaging
Fabulous tour from the bottom to the top of the windmill. All of the staff were friendly and welcoming and our tour guide was really impressive. He graciously taught us much about the history and geography of the Dutch landscape and the role of windmills in maintaining the water levels. His knowledge was extensive, and the tour felt intimate and engaging.

    Nice tour guide.
Everyone was very helpful - short term rebooking was no problem - they even started the tour earlier for us. Our tour-guide was very committed and told us everything about mills in the Netherlands. Also great view! The story about Rembrandt is a nice extra.

Perfect side trip to see a windmill
Although I didn't have time to go inside, the ladies were cheerful and curious about what had brought me out to their little corner of Amsterdam that day. I was on an 8 hour layover with a tour group and had just enough time to break away to see this windmill. Check that one off the bucket list! PS, there is an ice cream shop just across the street and outdoor picnic tables to relax and enjoy the day.

    Worth the time
We had some extra time and found this because of trip advisor. The staff were extremely sweet. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable of the wine mill. It was raining but he still made the most of it. I highly recommend a stop here especially if you are interested in learning about windmills. Great place

Really nice tour guides, I learned a lot! It was interesting to learn how windmills work, in this case it was a water based windmill.
I can recommend this place.

Having lived in the area for a year, finally visited and wish had gone before. The Guide was truly illuminating, thank you! Tour encompasses the history of NL, and 'the 'Dam', water levels, polders etc. The windmill itself is a rare fully functioning working model, used in the the area to control the water levels. Together with working models of their evolution in NL, you get to see the whole structure, with original parts, sails under way etc. Engineers will love! With insights into how NL built itself into one of the most powerful European countries, the 'mills played a major part - and learn the secret "sails" language too. Get out of Amsterdam for a day and away from tourists! There's a cheese house and brewery adjacent to the Molen, a new fish restaurant nearby, and quaint Sloten village itself (older than Amsterdam), plus decent local restaurants too for lunch/dinner ('Later on the Water'/Kirksizcht - (the former with canal side tables) - and an amazing (tiny) ice cream house (IJshoeve Sloten) which makes wonderful grapefruit sorbet.

The best windmill tour I have ever attended. So much history and an inclusive experience of artefacts, mechanical engineering and artistry. The tour explained in details hows the windmill operated since 1847 and how it is still of use in these present times. The souvenir shop is amazing and the prices are the cheapest you could find in the whole of Amsterdam. Definitely a very highly recommended experience.
