The area
Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

We had a very nice walk along Brouwersgracht and enjoyed the ore silent areas of Amsterdam. Still nice photo opportunities though

Although a small canal, it is really beautiful. Nice and relaxing with a few benches where you can take a pause and enjoy the view.

A minute away from Nieuwesijds Voorburghwal (= a main tram route) is this small beautiful canal without many tourists.

Back in the day this canal was lined with numerous breweries, hence its name, it is a nice quiet area, lovely just to walk around,

The Brewer's Canal is another wonderful canal in Amsterdam and quieter than the more popular Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht and Herengracht that branch off it. Home to many breweries in times gone by, we came across it after a random Jordaan wander. Photo opportunities of pretty houseboats and crafts of every description appear at every bridge that criss-cross the canal.

This area is not far from the main Central Railway Station. It is great to either relax in one of the many cafes and bars or just wander around.

Some great cafes and bars where you can sit and watch the world go by. A very short walk from Central Station. Also worth visiting the nearby Haarlemmerdijk and Haarlemmerplein.

This is a more narrow canal on the outer edge of the canal ring. It is quite tranquil considering it is in the heart of the city. There are many cool house boats along the sides and some are rented out for visitors. We saw 15 ducks in one little area, they must live there!

We spent a long weekend in Amsterdam, staying in one of the houseboats in Brouwersgracht. This is really the best way to experience Amsterdam. Closer to everything than most hotels and still in a very relaxed atmosphere with nice and authentic pubs, cafes and restaurants nearby without all the tourist traps you have in other parts of town.
