I only visited as part of a walking tour; but I learned the history behind the building, it is a pleasant building- also it isn't new

Didn't start well when we were informed that on top of the €120 we'd spent on museum cards, that they would also be adding a €9 surcharge to allow us to enter. The woman working at the cloakroom was almost comically rude, begrudgingly looking up from her smart phone to take our coats. Presumably she doesn't see much of that... More

The Nieuwe Kerk is a beautiful late-Gothic building, with some splendid chandeliers and a fine chancel. At the moment and for the next few months it houses an exhibition marking the 90th anniversary of the birth of Marilyn Monroe. I happened to be in Amsterdam in August of 1962 when the news broke of her death. In homage a Canadian... More

From outside this old church has a impressive, elegant, conservative look, nothing prepared us for its interior, a fascinating Marilyn Monroe exhibition with original items and good audio tour, contradicting with the church loveky architecture. Surprise in a church.

Very interesting visit....not knowing much about Dutch history we found the free audio tour quite informative. Lots of photos from the previous coronations held there.

The "burning bush" decorative fence at the end of the choir is worth a visit. The church has new exhibits every 6-9 months and they are invariably well curated.

We enjoyed our visit as there is a lot to see & the new audio tour (included) is excellent. Aside from the marble funerary monuments and fab pulpit, they also have binoculars so that you can see minute details (particular on the pulpit). Worth the 8 euros. If you feel it is not worth the money, then do not go... More

Externally, you never really appreciate the full scale of the church as it is squeezed within a block surrounded by other buildings. Founded over 600 years ago, this is the church in which royal marriages and investitures take place. Internally, the chief glories are the organ, the largest in the Netherlands, and the highly-carved wooden pulpit. If you can, plan... More

It was a nice church, now it is a museum. I am not sure why we entered, but inside was an exhibition, but not worth for the 8 euros.

This usually cost €8 but with the iamsterdam card and museumkaart it is reduced to €3.50. Definitely worth it with lots of information about the Dutch royal family and the origins of the church. You are given a free audio guide but I found that it didn't add much to what was already on the information boards. It was lovely... More

Staying in Centrum

Neighbourhood Profile
Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.
