About
The Royal Palace Amsterdam is in use by the Dutch Royal House. Most of the year, the Royal Palace is alsof open for visitors. You are welcome to discover the rich history and interior of this magnificent building in the heart of Amsterdam. Visitors are welcome to discover the building's rich past and legacies left by it's successive occupants - as Amsterdam's Town Hall for 150 years, the French Royal and Imperial Palace for 5 years and the Palace of the House of Orange for the past two centuries. The Royal Palace was built in the seventeenth century as the Town Hall of Amsterdam, after a design by Jacob van Campen. It's paintings and sculptures were made by some of the most distinguished artists of the time and allude to the city's influence and prosperity in the Dutch Golden Age. In 1808 Louis Napoleon, brother of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, became King of Holland and converted the Town Hall into a Palace. The superb collection of Empire furniture, clocks and chandeliers date from that period. The collection of Empire furniture is one of the best preserved and most complete collections in the world. The rooms in the Palace are decorated with artworks from the collection of the House of Orange-Nassau Historic Collections Trust. Many paintings show the various members of the family of Orange-Nassau

    Worth a visit
I’ve walked past many times. Now that I and my family have museum cards we decided to visit. Easy to reserve on-line. Helpful staff at the entry. Free cloakroom. Tour is short as not many rooms open. However, what we saw had historical significance and our kids really enjoyed it. So it was worth the visit.

Royal Palace still in use for official receptions
Large Royal palace with beautiful marble works and empire style furniture. Used for state- and other official visits, when the guests stay here as well. Good audio guide. Note: a bit strange that this museum can’t be found at TA under the Dutch name of Koninklijk Paleis.

    Awesome - Must see place
This is an exceptional architectural master piece. If you are in Amsterdam, dont miss this gem. We visited there March 2023. we spent around 2 hours there. audio guide which is freely available was so organised and informative. You can see only two floors but that is more than enough. Specially the citizen hall.

    Beautiful internal architecture
Don't let the exterior put you off. Only a cold, wet, snowy day in Amsterdam we decided to go in out of the cold. This place is absolutely stunning. The audio guide was so helpful in understanding what we were seeing. Very reasonable entry fee €12.50 and we were in there for about 3 hours. Would highly recommend.

    My alternative to shopping
My wife and daughter went shopping at De Bijenkork so I decided to take a tour of palace and get some history. Interesting. Maybe I spent 45 minutes to an hour listening to the highlights part of the audio tour. Better this than shopping but otherwise wasn’t a highlight of my trip.

    Make time to do this.
What an amazing palace. Really enjoyed walking around this beautiful building. The rooms inside of the palace are really worth taking the time to view this. Highly recommend doing this.

    Underrated
So this should be higher on the list. 75min audio guided tour. Very in-depth description involving the design/history of the palace. A valuable education on the Dutch culture and what makes them wonderful people. Quite honestly humbled and impressed. All adults (and children) should absorb this lecture for what it is.

    A Beautiful Palace
Let's face it. There are very few opportunities for most people to visit a royal palace. This is one of those chances. Do a little reading beforehand so you understand the history of the building, and get to know King Willem-Alexander. The Palace is simply beautiful. The audio guide is essential and very well done. The Dutch royal family is certainly not as famous as the British royal family, but you come away with a deeper appreciation for the history of The Netherlands and its history.

Great architecture, I regret not going inside
We walked from Amstel all the way to Dam Square and the Royal Palace. We did a little picnic at the square while admiring the beautiful architecture of the Royal Palace. The area was busy and filled with tourists even on a hot summer day. I regret not booking tickets to see the interiors.

    Stunning
Formerly the Town Hall, now serves as the King's residence when he's in the city. Construction started in 1648. The tour focuses on the 1st floor, in the rooms surrounding the impressive Citizen's Hall. including the Throne Room (albeit with no thrones) & a number of beautiful bedrooms, still used by visiting foreign dignitaries. Free & very detailed audio tour. Free lockers for your belongings. Photography is allowed without flash. Toilets & shop on site. Admission €12.50.

Great visit. Lots of interesting facts. Personally i would have liked a more interway of storytelling, although i did like the video with voice parts of some of the paintings.

Well worth a visit when in Amsterdam. The central hall upstairs is an impressive highlight and the audio guide is interesting and informative. The only thing that was slightly annoying was that you had to wait in queues to look in rooms behind plastic screens but we visited on Xmas eve so quite busy so maybe at quieter times it’s not as noticeable.

I went to the palace with my college aged daughter. It was on her bucket list to see in Amsterdam. It was a great tour and you had audio all throughout the palace. Very informative and worth doing.

We really enjoyed the tour. The guided digital tour is amazing and you can go at your own pace listening and watching in as much detail as you like. Fascinating to see the rooms used by world leaders as well as the history and amazing art especially the sculptures. This is so integral to Dutch history and Dam Square so a clever tour to let you see so much when it’s not in Royal use. Stunning.

Well located off Dam Square the palace is a great insight into the history of the Dutch Royal family. Some great pieces within, and very easy to navigate to absorb the story of the place
